Hi I am having an issue with Enterprise car rental, I hired a car which was a 2024 Nissan Juke it only had 6.5k miles on the clock. I Drove just over 100 miles when the car broke down with the clutch going.
i normally drive a manual car and have done for 40 years. Enterprise are saying it’s driver and down to me and charging me 2k for clutch and 1.5k for recovery and storage.
There was only 20 mins in between the car returning and me leaving with it but they are adamant it was my fault. They have threatens to take the money straight of my account.
I feel I am being blamed and chased as I was the customer the car broke down on.
Has anyone had similar experience and advice on how to deal with it? They have a had the clutch checked by an “independent inspector” but is obviously working on their behalf to try to recover costs.
this is distressing and any help would be appreciated.

I was not given opportunityto have my own independent Inspection as the work was done before I was even notified of the investigation1

Sounds iffy to me. You should be given the chance to have your own inspectors and be involved in the process.

Seems very strange to blame you for the clutch after just 20 mins with the car. I'd think it was far more likely a previous user had done something or there was a fault with the car if it happened at such a low mileage. Unlike with a crash there is no way they could prove that it happened in the 10 miles you drove the car rather than the other 6500 before you.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0

I assumed the OP collected the car 20 minutes after previous hirer had returned it. Is that correct?1

Could not see any mention of car breakdown responsibilities in their terms & conditions. There is a complaints procedure operated by the British Vehicle Association link ;BVRLA Complaint Eligibility. Certain AA memberships provide legal assistance.0

How did you pay for the car hire, and how much was the hire cost? If it was credit card and over £100 then you can involve your card issuer by making a S75 claim. If that doesn't work then you'll probably have to threaten legal action, and take it if necessary.

What's the suspected cause of the damage to the clutch?0
