What do you do when Crawford splits your insurance claim after more than two years?

Crawford have been "dealing" with a subsidence claim with RSA.

On Dec 23rd , after Crawford had obtained quotes from a building company for all the repair works under subsidence claim, accepted my excess monies and instructing the builder, the person in charge of my case at Crawford decided after more than 2 years of monitoring, that the claim should be split between accidental damage and subsidence. The ground floor under subsidence, and the rest under accidental damage.

Crawford then took anything not related to the ground floor off the list of works, and said I would have to make a further claim under accidental damage.

Crawford surveyor advised on initial inspection in 2022 that some of the damage was likely being caused by subsidence and some may be caused by a neighbouring property having subsidence affecting my property, and this would be classed as accidental damage. The accidental damage claim and the subsidence claim  has been open since the start awaiting Crawford clarification to move matters forward.

Does anyone know whether I will be expected to have two sets of builders to put matters right, and whether I will be responsible for the excess monies paid to the contractor, and my signed acceptance for the contractor to carry out all the works as originally requested by Crawford please? Will I now have a different loss Assessor for the "accidental damage" claim and a different set of builders for each claim?

I have reluctantly made a complaint to my insurers at RSA, with whom I have insured my property for more than 30 years continuously. I do not feel that the fault lies with them, but their appointed Agent, Crawford. I also feel aggrieved for the builders who have quoted for all the works, and taken time and care obtaining the quotes (we were even down to choosing paints and wall papers). I do not have any problems with them.

If anyone has had this happen to them and have any advice on how to proceed, I would be grateful for their help. Annemos was very helpful before.

Thank you.

  • Would Crawfords not instruct their own builders for both claims? They did for us when we had two overlapping claims and it wasn't a problem.

    Thanks for your reply
You would have thought so. This was also my suggestion.
Unfortunately RSA (my insurers) are no longer instructing Crawford on further claims as their loss adjusters.
I have a Lorega policy which covers supervision of works and fees as an extra to my insurance policy with RSA, but it does not cover subsidence. It will cover accidental damage. Due to Crawford not supplying information about accidental damage (although asked many, many times by myself and my Broker handler), they have been unable to help me thus far.
Thank you for your help. At least now I know Crawford can do this if they want to.
