If the buyer had bought this from almost any high street retailer he would have been told to jog on. This is so unjust.
They would have been told so incorrectly, a purchase from a trader is covered by the CRA and the customer would have recourse.

Correct. I'd be more concerned that anyone on here thinks that if you buy a new shower from a high street retailer that you wouldn't expect it to be working after 4 months, and if so you'd have no recourse to the retailer.
You'd probably get more than 12 months guarantee with a shower too, a shower should last 10-15 years. A quick Google suggests that showers generally have a 2-5 year guarantee.

I'm not saying OP should have to follow that, as a private seller, selling 'as new' just confirming how a retailer would work.

If you're purchasing at a cheaper price from a private seller then you have to factor in the lack of any guarantee or warranty beyond the first 30 days . If that's important to you then you need to purchase from retail, or a business seller.

In this case, as the seller, I would stick to your guns. You have no idea of when or how the item has been fit, whether guidelines have been adhered to, etc. I think it's unreasonable for the buyer to come back to a private seller after 4 months demanding a refund.

I once had a buyer come back to me (I'm a private seller) because a computer CPU I sold him had stopped working properly. Apparently he had an expert at a shop check over his system and he deemed the CPU to be at fault. Hence the buyer emailed me asking me how to process a return.
Oh I forgot to mention.......this was over 1.5years after the original sale!!!!!
Politely informed him to chase with the manufacturer as there was nothing further I could do. Never heard back from him again!
