I was due to fly out of Edinburgh to Basel on Friday and back Monday on Easy Jet. Outbound flight was delayed then cancelled due to storm Eowyn. EJ have already refunded the cost of both flights. However LV travel insurance won't pay my non refundable parking and accommodation costs because the reason for me not going was "due to an airline cancellation". I have what they call an Essentials policy. Had I purchased the more expensive policy I would have been covered for these items. I paid these items by credit card. Do I have any routes to recoup my losses?

I don't believe that a card provider has any obligation to refund costs arising from being under-insured, if the relevant parking/accommodation contracts weren't breached by the suppliers, and the airline isn't liable for these either.

The “Essentials”, cheaper policy clearly did not suit your needs.  Whilst the weather cancellation was perhaps unexpected, these things can happen especially over winter months. Important to consider what cover you need when purchasing travel insurance.

Had you booked as a package holiday you would also have been covered for the lost holiday costs with the holiday provider responsible for the replacement or cost.  DIY trips, without the correct insurance cover, doesn’t offer this safety net.

The payment method is irrelevant in this case. The hotel have not breached their contract with you, the room was sat there ready to be used and its none of their concern that you couldnt get there to use it. Blunt, maybe, but that is the fact of the situation and any S75 claim on a credit card would fail on this reason alone.

Thanks all. Not the replies I had hoped for but frankly the ones I expected. I've gone back over the LV Essentials policy which together with your replies confirms I'm at the end of this particular road. Hey ho.
