does anyone have the link to what i need to download to upgrade the firmware for 8400X on http://mtz.softpedia.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=10

The firmware updates on the mtz website appear to be as yet only for the earlier Yamada players, there is a firmware update on the Yamada website to improve compatibility with DVDR media http://www.yamada.de/ftp/loader8400x.zip but it may be the same as your current firmware, further updates will appear in time no doubt.0

does it really matter what type of DVD+R you use i.e. 4x/8x/16x because i presume if your recording something it will all be at the same speed?0
-
Some low quality DVDR's will causes problems no matter what speed you record them at, they will also fail over time, go to one of the many DVDR forums they will have info on what are the best to go for, don't use DVD+R myself, only DVD-R's0

You are right. The cost of a consumer DVD (re)writeable disk is for the patents for the dyes inside the disk. Certain disks are more compatible with certain makes of disk (acually the dye they use).
The DVD writer you have purchased has a DVD drive in it that is identical to one you might purchase for your PC. It is an IDE device. Instead of a PC, the DVD writer you purchased as a complete system on a chip (SOC).
The only difference between the drive in the writer, and a PC one is that the front has been modified to fit the case of the DVD Writer unit. Unlike a PC DVD drive you will not be able to upgrade the firmware in the drive (not the same as the firmware in the DVD recorder!) and so will not be able to upgrade the drive (I would not recommend plugging the DVD drive into a PC for the purpose of trying to reflash as the unit is OEM and so not the same specification as a PC drive).
For these reasons, try brands and dyes that work for your unit, and are compatible with all the players you wish to use.
The better quality brands (eg. Verbatim) have better testing and quality control than cheaper brands.
Also consider using the DVD+RW disks.
I've always found SVP communication good, they offer a money back if the disks don't work for you (check this is still running) they even collect my disks for free!
There are many mid range brands that offer a compromise on quality Vs Price.
Don't be afraid to ask what dye is used in a disc, most vendors will provide this info. If you find a dye that works for you stick with it.
Dyes are only stable for 7 years (9 for commercial DVDs) if you get errors etc try coping the disc on a PC as PCs have usually newer and more accomodating drive assemblies.
Hope this helps.Seth.0 -
Out of the people that have it, have you tried playing movies through usb? or anyone know if it can be done and if it will play dvd files (dvd that have just been riped to a hard drive and not re encoded.)
Any help would be great.

It is free delivery and if you subscribe to the newsletter via e-mail you can details of how to get a £10 off voucher which takes the price down to £119.99.
I took a chance that the members of digital spy forum were right (no offence antoniomontana) and ordered from Maplins and guess what it is the Yamada 8400X DVD Recorder & DIVX DVD Player they are selling. So it is well worth ordering from Maplins (they still have some in stock) if you haven't already got paid for it elsewhere.
@ overload The Yamada model that is currently on the homepage at special reserve is only a dvd/divx player not a recorder. The Yamada 8400X DVD Recorder & DIVX DVD Player is still £124.99 at special reserve (not including delivery).0
