DivX DVD Recorder in the Specialreserve sale (merged)

Picked up a 8400X Divx player/DVD recorder from Special Reserve sale. seems to be the cheapest I could find including vat and delivery. also tempted by the Radeon 9800 pro graphics card for £84 and some pc games.

Seem to have quite a lot of stuff on the sale page, not sure how long it's running for tho:

The home page for yamada does not list this as a product!!

Have you tried connecting a USB HD to the unit? or used the firewire port?

There is a firmware updgrade guide here..

You'd think so wouldn't you. Never seen one though. Or a combination DivX DVD recorder and Hard Drive based PVR/Freeview tuner. That'd clear some space under the TV :)

Products based on chips due in 6 months or so.. [Rant's and comments http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=33508&page=2&pp=10

XVid/DivX seems to work well and the quality is great. The on the fly compression needs some quite powerful CPUs, but the new SOCs (System on a chip) are up to the task!

Did you know all the DivX/Xvid players / recorders are Linux based as is Sky Plus and Tivo. I've the KISS 1000 DP player uses the same chipset as this recorder! I paid £100 just for this player this price is for a DVD Recorder as well!

I got one of the Yamada DivX / mpeg 4 players (not this dvd recorder with player), and it was amazing played everything buy salami! mpegs, xvids, vcd, dvd, photo Cd, PC CD, music CD, etc, all flawless.

I bought eight divX / xVid players various makes to compare them (for work) and the Yamada was in the top 3 it was MUCH cheaper than the top 2 players which were more than 4 times the cost of the Yamada.

Very good quality machine, reasonable remote. very impressed.

Lots of pictures showing the unit, some text not in English ;) The charts and info are clear though.

    http://www.eri.lv/insidelook/yamada_dvd_dvr8400x.php

This thread has lots of info and prices (from May! when ebuyer sold these units) and link so these reviews.

There is also a good detailed account of setup etc...

    Two obeservations on this thread:

    1) The unit seems only to support DVD+R and DVD+RW for recording
    2) There is no record to Hard disk, the external USB device is for viewing only.

Support for the new Divx6 format, not that important as xVid is supported today. DivX6 is proprietary (like Apple iPod AAthing format) and Xvid is open like Ogg etc (Don't give me that no one uses ogg story.. Xbox live Halo2 etc all ship with Ogg codec [2 mlillion just in Halo2] most modern players support this format, as do games on game cube, most PC games, PS2 etc..) anyway if you still care about Divx 6 compatibilty this is a good guide.

What we really want now is a standalone player that supports RATDvd!

What you need is a LAN cable coming out of the back this could then be linked to PC and bang goes Divx on CD which can jump and have problems!

Kiss have done this I think, I have owned 3 yamadas now and think they are the best for sure!

Get updates from http://mtz.softpedia.com/index.php rather than the site, these work better and fix more bugs as yamada back up is pretty bad, but hey its a cheap playa!
