Are we now being ripped off by Comparison Sites

Car Insurance.
So last year I was ripped off by my car insurance company as they doubled my premium and I did not have time to look around.
This year I searched comparison sites and I am getting even higher than last year. I have not made any claims for 19 years and still my premium is coming over £850.00 for a 2012 VW Golf 1200cc.
When I aske why my premium is so high, they give the same answer, as they have given for the last 5 years, you have not had a accident for a long time so you are due to have a accident !
It has actually worked out cheaper NOT to go through a comparison site.

Nothing you said is a rip off.
You didn't look around last year.
    You did this.

Maybe you live in a high risk area, maybe you’ve had ‘not at fault’ incidents, maybe you’ve had motoring convictions. Without the full details you entered in the comparison site it’s all conjecture. Who did you get insured with in the end?

If you think the comparison engines are ripping you off, have you gone direct to brokers and insurers for quotes?

    How did they compare?

Failed to look last year so the renewal may have been really cheap compared to new policies elsewhere. I have had that in the
past where the renewal was substantially cheaper than the comparison sites.

Family member spotted a Focus with a smaller engine than their current car but the insurance on it would have been £780 where
their current car is just under £300.

Along with the comparison sites you should always shop around further.  This year a company of the comparison sites gave
me a super low price so I left my long term club scheme for it. As they say prices go up and down...

I would say I’m very open minded when it comes to car insurance I do think they try and push there luck on the basis of maybe hope you’ll renew and go with it attitude I’m only basing this off my last 2 renewals.

Me and wife’s car both came up for renewal close together my renewal went up from £500 to £900 found it else where like for like cover for £450 rang to cancel hey presto matched to £450 stayed with same insurer.

then wife’s month later same again went up £280 rang to cancel matched it straight away and even reduced her excess to £100 from £500 even when she explained the quote she got was like for like with £500 excess.

My insurance renewal was about £60 cheaper than last year, just about beat it with a cashback offer, could have easily beaten it but the cheapest wanted £400 excess, such is life

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I have always found using comparison sites (and cashback) works out cheaper, sometimes even when it's the same company.

My 5008 1.6 Bluehdi is very expensive to insure an I do not know why.
I've used all my old addresses around the country.
£850 to £1800, 12 NCB over 55 years old and low mileage driver as I'm a carer.

For the last 6 year I've been with by miles
Top level of cover for a great price, Full comp, protected bonus, hire car, legal cover etc.
£110.00 for parked on the drive. Then 12.5p a mile driven, billed like a mobile at the end of each month.
Max daily charge of 150 miles. So a round trip I made to Blackpool from Ashford in kent on the same day cost £18.75. 630 mile round trip.

Thanks for the info as I will be renewing my insurance next month

I have a 2016 Jaguar XE and have never made a claim in 60 years driving

I am 84 years old and my insurance goes up by about £60 per year and expect it to be £1000 this time

I have asked for a quote with Bymiles so see how it goes

Peugeots are currently suffering a spate of parts being stolen from cars in car parks, the parts are not coded and are stolen to order, so cars in car parks overnight, sometimes on roads as well are being stripped and parts sold to order. I know two people this has happened to in the last three months Similar with VW putting the expensive radar sensor behind the front badge of the car, with no security and no encoding needed, making them a high profile target for theft to order. Other cars are being stolen and stripped for parts entirely, with the chassis crushed and sold as scrap. Stripping all the parts from a car can more than double the value if it is less than three years old, on some cars it can result in a 5x increase in the value of the parts vs vehicle.
