Mr Fritha says, er.... yep!
Basically when you surf your computer saves copies of what you look at in Tempoary Internet Files. Usually a dodgy webpage would be one that had a dodgy active x control on it (active x basically lets you see visual effects or sometimes more exctiting things, mostly they're legitimate and nothing to worry about).
Firefox doesn't support active x controls, but IE does. If the security settings are high enough (as in not on the default) it will ask you before it downloads them. To change/check your settings:
Go to tools then internet options
click on the security tab
Under 'security level for this zone' click custom level.
Scroll down until you find 'download signed active x controls' and make sure 'promt' is ticked
scroll down until you fine 'download unsigned active x controls' and make sure that says 'disable'
And that should be fine :-)
I hope that helps :-)
Edit: oh by quarantine it means that it's shoved it away somewhere safe where it can't get at your computer it's fine there, it's basically what the name suggests!Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
Does anyone know if the Thomas Cole Solutions emails are connected to the OP's email or if its legit?0
-
Thomas Cole Solutions emails cropped up straight after I entered a couple of comps earlier today, as they were acknowledging comp entry, didn't take a lot of notice of them at the time. Trying to work out which comps they were, something to do with glasses was one of them.0

Ok done a bit of digging and googling and it would appear that basically TCS are an IT company, from the copyright notice at the bottom of the Gloucesteronline website it appears they built (and possibly host) their website. So chances are they're just the periodic newsletters it mentions in the T&Cs of the competition, actually looking at it, it does say that it won't pass your details to any unrelated third party so that's how they're getting round it! A bit bloody cheeky but unlikely to be anything dodgy
Essentially I wouldn't worry about the TCS emails they're more likely to be annoying advertising that anything harmful.
Hope that helpsComping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
Thanks for all your help. I did run Adaware and it came up with one critical item which I got rid of. I am convinced because of the festive break and my use of the computer over that period that is is something to do with the comp from Gloucester on line, the curtain one, as it's about the only use of the computer I have had. Not downloaded anything. Hope it's now solved and once again thanks for the help.

A couple of weeks ago and def from one of the comps sites picked up the trojan Methuan. Norton let it through ?? then detected it. Used the fix and Norton scan said all ok.??? My Norton spyware is ticked so is on.
Went on Microsoft looking for scan to check anyway. First used Spydoctor - found 35 spyware infected files and removed them. Now have their recommended Windows Defender. Dont know if this helps anyone.0 -
Many Thanks Fritha for your help
I'm not pc savy at all, though I do occassionally go on the tech site for advise, and have downloaded AVG/Ad-Aware/Spybot/CC-Cleaner to protect PC, but still not sure what they all do TBH, but at least I can stop worrying about those emails now, and will just keep deleting it, and hopefully they will give up.
Cheers:beer:0 -
I'm in the same boat, but what gets me is that I've just come back form a few days away, and the PCs been off for the last few days, but the email was sent earlier this afternoon.
I could understand a trojan doing this if the PC was connected, but couldn't work out how otherwise.
Am about to launch a full scan just in case0 -
How do you both know that the email was sent? Did people let you know or was it in your sent files?
too many comps..not enough time!0 -
I had the same thing happen to me, some program sent an email to all addresses in my address book. It was an email selling pc's electronics etc.
