I've just entered a couple of comps with Gloucester online - and they appear to be something to do with that. Will let you know if I get loads of spam in the next couple of days.:D

Thanks for this. I was trying to remember which comp it was and I am pretty sure that it's something to do with them too. do you have a link for the comp you entered please.

I've just asked Mr Fritha who's a computer programmer and he says the most likely thing is that you have a virus and to update your virus checker and run a full virus scan. If it is that you 'should' pick it up and get rid of it. He says there's no 100% safe way of protecting yourself so it's just bad luck to pick up a virus.
He says that although it is possible that a competition could access your address book it's unlikely. He's never heard of it so you probably don't need to worry too much about entering stuff.
He's recommends downloading and running adware as that zaps spyware when you run it. The reason firefox is a bit safer is that it doesn't let websites put stuff on your computer without your permission which older versions of IE did.
Hope that helps a bit :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
This sales message was sent to all contacts in my address book. My PC expert says they have hacked in and it is probably something to do with a competition I have entered. I only knew about it when he rang me to ask about a funny email from me. He knew straightaway what had happened. I have Panda security which is excellent and also Adwatch and Adaware. Took awhile for him to sort it all out and then I had to email everyone to apologise.
Unfortunately I can't be sure which competition was the culprit.0 -
Well I didn't enter that Gloucesteronline one (& it didn't happen to me) if that helps
EDIT: Oh I entered the curtains one0 -
Ok follow up: I've done a bit of googling and I'm pretty convinced it's a Trojan, I found this, it's a different website address to the one in the OP but an almost identical email which is usually the giveaway, It would appear to be really common as well.
I asked Mr Fritha to take a look at that Gloucesteronline website and he says it's very unliekly that it came from there, he says normally those files are downloaded. It could have been any inocuous file that you've downloaded recently unfortunately.Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
I entered it and had a couple of emails from Thomas Cole but that's it, no email like the one in the OP.
too many comps..not enough time!0 -
