Incorrect credit file entry vs O2 vs Mortgage

I am a first time buyer and in the process of applying for a mortgage via a broker. I was asked today to provide my credit file/report which was done and it showed all the information Experian, Equifax and Transunion have for me.

It was brought to my attention that I have a loan with O2 from 2019 and of which I have defaulted on for over 5 years. This is the first I have heard and know about this. I have been in contact with O2 this afternoon who cannot find any record of this account so are not able to do anything about it.

What can I do?

Ask them to stop reporting it.

O2 cannot find this account at all, so have stated they cannot do anything. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

I have a feeling how it happened. I’ve always been an iPhone user. For some reason, I thought I’d try an Android phone. I didn’t get on with it so went back to an iPhone and returned the Android handset well within the 14 day cooling off period. It appears they never registered the handset having been returned hence why there’s an outstanding balance of £730.00.

Well it drops off on the 6th anniversary of the default so it will be gone soon

Yes, it sure will. Doesn’t help me at this present stage in applying for a mortgage though with the house sold subject to contract 👎
  • have you raised a dispute on the information reported to CRA's?

Out of three credit agencies, it was Transunion that was showing the defaulted payments. I raised a dispute with them yesterday and have received an automated response with a reference and a turnaround time of 28 days. What does that process normally entail… Transunion getting in contact with O2?

If the account shows on the other 2 with nothing adverse, you need to ask Transunion why they are reporting different information.  If the account is only showing on Transunion, you need to make a complaint to O2 sending them a copy of the entry and tell them to correct this information to show the account was never used.  There will be a section within 02 that deal with the credit agencies.  Good luck

It is O2 that will have to resolve this.

Lodge a complaint with O2. Ignore what their their first level customer service agents state

O2 report the debt to the CRAs

A dispute with CRAs will eventually go to O2 who will either say the debt is wrong and it will be removed or it is right and it will stay

A formal complaint to O2 is the way forward, followed by the ombudsman if necessary

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
