Dual sim setup

If you get a phone with a dual sim, do you need to do some special setup ?
For example, do you need to run two versions of the Phone and Messages apps,
so that you can keep separate logs for the two sims?

What happens if you are on a call, and then get an incoming call on the other sim?

Can only comment on how the iPhone/iOS works. Only one SIM at a time can be selected as active for mobile data. Although there is an additional option to allow mobile data switching due to coverage issues. No need for multiple apps, in fact that isn't even possible.

Never had the two calls at once situation, but I suspect a dialogue comes up that allows you to pause one call and switch to the other.
  • I have a primary and secondary sim (one is a e-sim). When dialling I select which I want to use. Incoming calls flag which is which so I can see how to greet the caller (one is a business sim).

Two incoming calls are treated the same as a single sim - I can pause and answer or reject as I see fit.

The call/text log identifies which sim was used.

Messenger I have one app with two profiles and get notifications for both. I simply toggle between my profiles to see/respond to messages.

WhatsApp I have both personal and business apps. I am not sure if I could use two numbers on the same app.

    Hope that helps?

So there's no need to plan for using the phone differently, or anything to avoid.

Is the second SIM mainly used when travelling?

My second SIM is there just to give backup as a second network when wandering about bits of the country with variable mobile coverage. It's a cheapy PAYG. My partner (more by luck than judgement) has coverage from the other two networks.

When travelling the second SIM is switched to an eSIM since these are now the easiest way to get local coverage (at least this has been my recent experience travelling in Asia).

this is 100 % about use case

some people run a dual sim devices as they  have  both business and personal  numbers  and accounts which are entirely seperate ,but they are in a position where they can  have  a single device

other people due to where they  go on a regualr basis have a need to have  access to 2 different networks for  coverage reasons

My second sim is for my business (only a a PAYG) so avoids the need to carry two phones.

I haven’t had to do anything differently except to make sure I check which sim is flagged for an incoming call,  so that I don’t inadvertently answer a business call with ‘hi’.  I have occasionally accidentally sent a business text from my personal sim which has caused some confusion to my customers.

My personal sim is set as my primary, but I allow mobile data switching. This js handy when one network has a better signal than the other. I also have both set up for WiFi calling.

In daily use it is very handy!
