Monzo

Anybody experienced with Monzo?  I had a Creation card which was great but they are stopping doing this card end of Jan25.  Other alternative could be Halifax Clarity?

Yup, use it all the time. Also Chase as well are equally good.

What specifically do you want to know?

If you want a credit card, Barclaycard Rewards is better than Halifax Clarity as it pays cashback as well as offering zero fees on foreign spending.

If you want a debit card, Monzo is not the best either. Monzo has limits on the amount you can withdraw from ATMs without incurring fees. Better options are Starling and First Direct which do not impose limits on how much you can withdraw from ATMs without incurring fees. Chase is also better as it pays cashback on purchases.

They just renewed my card in December. So not stopped for me.
  • Not too bothered about money withdrawals, they would be relatively small if used.  Just a card that does not bump the exchange rate and charges no fees if you pay it off. Just like Creation did.  Don't want open bank accounts to get one and prefer credit card. Cashback interesting but not essential.  Just came back from Canada and did not need cash once.

They wrote to me in December (email) and I phoned their CS.  Staff do not know why but only told it is senior management business decision. Not sure if card can still be used in UK only or just stopped altogether, but definitely not overseas any more.  If you hear otherwise let me know.

From their website. If you don’t want to open a current account you’ll need to look elsewhere.

You’ll need a Monzo current account to apply for Flex. Monzo current account Ts&Cs apply. UK residents & 16+ year olds only.

I don't know why you'd choose Monzo over a cashback card? I mean cashback is literally free money! You also realise you're replacing a credit card with a debit card? If you want to rent a car abroad, you'll need a credit card.

I don't understand the hype around Monzo. You might look cool with an orange card, but what it offers is not that special compared to other current accounts available on the market.

It's just you and your card.

I’ve got both Monzo and Halifax clarity for spending money abroad. Monzo I load with money from my current account and then spend away for everyday things like drinks and meals. Any big purchases or for cash withdrawals I use the credit card and always make sure I clear the balance once home by the due date. Very little interest for the cash withdrawals.

As I understand it, withdrawing cash on a credit card may have a negative affect on credit reports. In itself that’s not necessarily a reason not to do it, but it’s probably worth taking into consideration if you’re looking to borrow money.
