I dont even know why pple use ebay at all
I mean its not the safest place to shop

I couldn't agree more - I'm sure that there are many people like me who've used it in the past but have been turned off it by fraudsters and sellers who misrepresent goods - and what do ebay do about it? absolutely nothing - so I'd rather go somewhere that is trustworthy and leave ebay to the chavs and rip-off merchants

Gumtree has sold nothing for me.

All I get is people wanting to pay me £250 for a DVD by bank details etc.
    All scams!

I do agree with part of your comment, but it is perfect for those who are wised up to these types of scams. Someone offered to pay me double the cars worth if I hold it for him, for it then to be shipped, I knew it was a load off rubbish

And had a long email conversation with the scammer, with him threatening me see part of the email
Hello, wat the Hell did you send to me ..what did you take me for i say,for the fact that am willing to pay you with cheque dose not mean Am a scarm ,if is that you know who you are talking to you would have not plan to mail me back.
    lol

But I think I am pretty good at working out a scam, so Gumtree is wicked for me.

My Nan couldn't even turn on a pc let alone work out how to use the internet.

Most of my queries through Gumtree were real, and it was sold to a real person in the end:D might have just been your luck

I dont even know why pple use ebay at all
I use it for 2 reasons.
Either getting stuff much cheaper than the high st OR getting collectibles or out of production items that are not possible to get in the shops.
Last year I got my Dad an old cine film editor.
He has lots of cine film from the 70s but you can't easily buy the bits for it, but plenty of people have it in their homes - ebay is ideal for that.
Also for collectibles that are no longer sold.
I mean its not the safest place to shop and do pple want 2nd hand stuff that much???
It's pretty safe if you buy via paypal.
It's not only 2nd hand stuff, but yes I have no problem watching 2nd hand DVDs if they are much cheaper. There is no degradation if smeone has watch a DVD once.
As also pointed out I buy mostly new stuff from ebay.
I've also had some very cheap weekend aways so it's not just "stuff".
And for the seller a fee is charged..whats in it..just cant see the point of ebay at all.
Yes there is a fee, but it's a much wider audience (and hence much higher prices) than say using trade-it or a car boot sale (which also has a fee but much smaller audience).
have been turned off it by fraudsters and sellers who misrepresent goods

I've succesfully made chargebacks via paypal whenever I've had problems.
I am very cautious when purchasing not via paypal and factor it into the price.

The main piece of advice is "factor it into the price".
e.g. Deduct the hassle factor, postage, lack of after sales service and chance of a rip-off from the price you're prepared to pay over the shop price (of course shop price can involve petrol and parking fees).
If it's not worth it then simply pay full price at a shop.
    It's quite simply really.

Ebay is great for buying, as long as everything goes smootly.

Ebay is awful for selling, awful fees, then paypal fees and a long time to get your money.
