If my spouse or I go to live in our second home

If my spouse or I go to live in our second home will we simply each be liable for separate council tax in each property?

Yes. The occupant is liable. Single person discount applies to both, of course

Typically, council tax is paid on the property you live in as your primary residence. If either of you moves into the second home and it becomes your main residence, you will be liable for the council tax on that property. The council tax for your primary residence would still apply to the first home.

they will soon spot if they are not ! I am sure everyone with a second home has thought of this wizard wheeze but you can be pretty sure they will want good evidence that it is a separation
  • Does it matter whether it’s a separation or not?

I expect the council will be sceptical about you genuinely deciding to live at separate addresses for any other reason.
  • It’s not as if I am asking for a discount however.

if it is not then I suspect they will assume it is a way of avoiding the extra second home council tax. If I thought there was a chance it would work then I'd be off back to the seaside like a shot
