Did someone press the 8 key one too many times?
Or was it supposed to be 21288.8 (accidentally included a digit that shouldn't have been)?
My guess would be that the estimate relates to a calculation made by the supplier on 1st January when the rates changed.   For better accuracy the estimate is likely have have been rounded to one decimal place, giving a reading of 21288.8 units.  On a printed bill this could easily be misread as 212888.
If so, the consumption would be 304.2 cubic metres or 304.2(00) cubic feet.
On a Standard Variable Tariff the cost of a kWh is approximately 6.34p but this varies regionally.  Similarly, the Calorific Value also varies slightly.  Therefore, excluding the standing charge the cost would be approximately 304.2 x 11.2 x 6.34 = £216.00 (Metric) or 304.2 x 31.66 x 6.34p = £610.60 (Imperial).

The bill looks OK as far as it goes, but because it's entirely based on estimates it's wrong.
You say the reading today is 21593. That's a lower reading than was estimated back in October.
When did someone last provide an actual reading? Do you have the previous bils? Can you contact the supplier and tell them your actual reading from today, and ask them to re-bill?
Someone on this board has a signature saying "never pay an estimated bill". That's a fairly extreme position but there's some merit in that approach.

My SIL has "supposedly" been dealing with all the paperwork, bills etc. But obviously hasn't.   We are due to complete the sale of the house on Wednesday next week and I'm just trying to work out roughly what will need to be paid.

You will definitely want to have an actual reading when the house is finally sold.  Best to get a date stamped photo so there's no misunderstandings with the purchaser.

And you're just talking about the gas - is everything ok with the electricity?

Send them today's reading and you'll get a replacement bill.  Note that today's reading is much less than BG has estimated.
BG's calculations are based on the meter being metric.  Is that actually the case?

Too late now, but it looks like your MIL was paying on receipt of bill (standard credit) which is significantly more expensive than Direct Debit.

Don't forget to read the water meter, if there is one.

Would anyone be able to work out approximately what the gas bill would be?

MIL died almost 1 yr ago and and the balance for both gas and electricity bill going off BGs estimates is £887.39 to be paid by 24th Jan.

Things between the sons & daughters are a bit awkward as the daughter took over and decisions have been made between 1 soon and daughter before 2nd son was made aware.

If we knwew what the last actual reading was, and the tariff that has applied since then? Yes.

As a very rough guess, based on gas only (so assuming the electricity bill is accurate), at least £200 less than that.
