What is HDMI

I'm quite confused  .

I got my son's a PS3 for Christmas, but at the moment it's not set up for them to play online, so I've been looking into how to do that. I thought that's what an HDMI cable was for, but now I'm not so sure. It looks like it enables tv's to show HD stuff? So does that mean that the blue-ray discs they got with their PS3 won't be shown in HD on our LCD HD ready telly without an HDMI cable? And if that's what it's for then how do I get the PS3 set up so they can play online??? Help!

  • The HDMI cable connects the PS3 to the TV and that is all it's for.

An ethernet cable would connect the PS3 to the internet via your router (assuming you have one) or wirelessly , (60Gb version only)

Thanks RRE. So does that mean that I'll need to get an HDMI cable to watch HD blue-rays?
  • It does, but they needn't cost the earth. there are differing opinions on here whether or not spending £10 or £60 gets you the best value and quality. The consensus on here, I think, and I include myself, suggest that you should try one from the likes of Tesco or somewhere like that, before going overboard and spending a king's ransom.

i am pretty sure there is an official ps3 hdmi cable that costs around £17. any hdmi cable will probably do though. i have seen prices from as little as £10 to over £100. i am sure the official one would do.
  • a friend of mine got a 40gb PS3 yesterday he got his up and running wirelessly as he has wireless BB just go into the settings on the PS3 and go to connection's...also on the back on any PS3 game movie you get it will tell you which format it'll work with as my friend's will only play 720p format and not 1080p which he is annoyed about now...as his 360 is 1080i so he is considering taking his back as he says it's a rip off...does anyone know which games are 1080p or are they all in 720p...

HDMI = high definition multimedia interface:D

    + the i in 1080i = intermediate
    and the p in 720p = progressive

The PS3 can output the full 1080p format.

Has he defiantly got a tv capable of 1080p? Check the resolution and see how many vertical lines it can display.

The i in 1080i stands for interlaced by the way. Have a read of this.

Your pal hasn't been ripped off.
Either the TV can't display 1080p
    he isn't using HDMI cable
    settings on TV/PS3 are wrong.

HDMI cables are the same no matter what price you pay, unless they're faulty of course.
it carries a digital signal which doesn't degrade until the cable is dozens of metres long.
a cheap cable is as good as an expensive one and anyone who says otherwise either doesn't know or is trying to sell an expensive one! :)
