The hotel have done nothing wrong and have merely stuck to the terms of the booking you agreed to.
Contact your travel insurance.2 -
This would be down to travel insurance.
Once you have paid, then you've done your part, and the hotel did their part by providing the room the next day. The fact that you fail to show up is irrelevant.
If you didn't pay then arguably you'd be breaching the contract and they have a right to mitigated damages, which might be lower than the full cost if they were able to re sell the room. However the day before, its unlikely they can sell it anyway, so the damages are likely the full cost anyway.

Unfortunately this is the risk you take with non-refundable bookings - presumably you selected the non-refundable rate because it was cheaper than the flexible one that would have allowed you to cancel or rearrange the date.
The fact that you could not fulfil your side of the contract is not the fault of the hotel, and as the above poster says you'd need to claim the moeny back via your travel insurance (if any).

Telling the owner you were going to try and stiff them the day before your booking wasn't the smartest idea.
Travel insurance is the only way ahead.

Just for future, non refundable means just that and the reason for cancellation is irrelevant. No refund at all for any reason.
Also trying to cancel the payment through your bank could be fraud as the hotel provided the service, you just wanted to cancel.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

Seems straightforward enough.
Contact your insurers.
Hotel haven't done anything they weren't entitled to do.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0 -
Sorry, but as others have said, the terms are clear. The hotel is perfectly entitled to charge. Non-refundable bookings are always cheaper but present an element of risk. If you hadn't paid a little more for a no-cost cancellation and don't have travel insurance then I'm afraid you will just have to accept the hit.
