Octopus vs eon

  • I've had a large portfolio of rental property where tenants can choose their own energy supplier. Over the years many chose Eon and I had lots of issues with Eon admin, bills, communication, refunds, in fact every single aspect of energy supply & billing created a problem. I would never return to them regardless of how cheap their costs were. Maybe they have improved but I'm not gonna be the one to find out. Good luck.

In the latest 'Which?' survey, Octopus are at the top and E.On are well down the list.  British Gas, Ovo and SO Energy get the wooden spoon.

I have been with Eon next since November 2021 when they took over my account following the demise of Symbio.  A couple of issues have arisen but they were always resolved to my satisfaction.  I had to raise a formal complaint once but that galvanised them into action.

In my opinion they offer a better EV tariff than Octopus does, not least because they offer the cheap rate right up until 7 AM which is ideal for heating my house and hot water before I get up but not having to make it too hot in the night.

Do you have to show you own an EV to get on that tariff?

T+C changed early December, prior to that T+C said EV or Battery.

I did not have to offer any proof of EV ownership but it was a condition of the tariff.  Looking at my pattern of overnight usage, Eon could probably infer that I am charging an EV.

    How?

    You use a granny charger.

It could just be an oven, or your heat pump?

Surely pulling 3kw for 5 hours or more every night would show a serious peak in consumption that is unlikely to be an oven or a heat pump.

Either storage heaters or solar battery could show similar patterns, but would be Winter only, or at best much reduced in Summer.

The 2.5kW drawn by a granny charger is hardly proof of EV ownership.

It could easily be a heat pump, or battery storage, or a serious baking habit, anything really!

Nobody knows what the electricity is being used for other than the home owner.

I charge my home batteries every night at a similar level, it is not enough to lead somebody to the conclusion that I have an EV.

However, when I plug a car into my dedicated car charger, Octopus do actually know it is an EV and they actually control the charging.
