Parking Permit

Hello, controlled parking has just been introduced to my street.   The council have told us that each residence can only apply for two permits but there are three people living here, Me, Partner and son and we all have cars.

We have called and emailed the council but they will not let us apply for an extra permit, even though we have lived here for over 15 years and there is plenty of space in our street to park.

Does anyone have any advice please?

Thank you

Sharon

2 cars per household is a resonable allowance.  Councils are under a lot of pressure to disuade car use generally, but especially in towns and cities.  This is one way of doing that, but even then it's fairly generous.  It's their rules I'm afraid, and if they let you have 3 permits then they've got to let everyone (not just your street) have 3 permits.

If you insist on challenging this further then I would not use the language that you have used here i.e. "lived here for 15 years" and "plenty of room on the street for parking".  This is adding emotions to the argument which is not relevant.  You might stand a better chance if you justify why you need 3 permits e.g. you are both out at work and your son has no other option for work than to drive

Similar rules where I live. If the scheme is beyond the consultation stage then not much you can do other than find somewhere else to park the third car (outside the zone or by acquiring an off-road space).

Ask a neighbour if they will apply for one for you.

Round here the car has to be registered at the address the permit is issued to. This is to stop those who dont have a car getting a permit so visitors can use the space.

I can guess the reason for that question but there is no and has never been any requirement to park outside the area of your property.

I'm not sure how that would even work with maisonettes or multi level occupation buildings.

I have lived in various areas in London and parking even on the same street sometimes was difficult,

Some councils have annual visitor permits which you pay more £££ for but thats how councils think and work so you can have a third permit.
Go online and see how many permit options exist .

The council are after money how ever they can get it no matter what reasoning or cover story is trotted out by any tom !!!!!! or harry .

Presumably the council carried out some sort of consultation on introducing a permit scheme?  Did they not state at that stage that permits would be limited to two per household?

We've just had parking restrictions implemented but its because they've putting in thousands of new flats just over 1 KM away with most having no parking so they want to stop those there parking in our area (at least that was the story).

Around our way some people who have off street parking has suddenly found it very lucrative to rent their spaces out but our permits are very expensive and in particular for businesses which are twice the price of residential permits.

Do you have space to put in a driveway so you can get at least 1 car off the road?
