P45 no new employer

Today I received my P45. I finished work on 31/12/24.

I believe if I was starting another job, I'd give the P45 to the new employer. I'm not planning on working again.

Do I have to do anything with the P45? Do HMRC automatically get a copy of it, or do I have to send it to them? If not, presumably they will think I'm still employed.

I've read online, that I should send it to my pension provider. If so, which one? Or is it all of them?

HMRC will have known you aren't employed anymore before your P45 was even printed out, so no need to send it to them.

Ok, but who would have told them? Can't believe my employer would.

Almost all PAYE payroll goes through the HMRC Real Time Information process now. Info here, including the leaver process https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a74cb1c40f0b61df4778894/RTI-TIIN.pdf

The main reason a P45 is still issued to the former employee is to “cover the join” where they claim benefits or go into a new role and their HMRC record needs to be connected.

A P45 also replaces your P60 if you don’t work again that tax year. So you need to keep it.

I assume ‘Congratulations on your retirement’ is appropriate here?

Thank you. I like the question mark. My last actual day at work was 20th December. On the 22nd, I got ill. Admitted to hospital on 26th , Boxing day. In for six nights. Lots of tests, scans while in. These showed up a totally separate issue, which led to further tests, and has already been diagnosed as cancer. Now awaiting surgery, which I've been told should be within the next 3 weeks.

So, since my last day, less than a month ago, an awful lot has happened to me.

I'm 65, never been ill before, other than flu, three times in my life. I was thinking of putting this in the bold leap thread, but I think people tend to prefer happy holiday retirements in there !

I’m so sorry to hear this! That’s a lot to cope with all at once. I hope all goes well. X

Just checked online tax account. Still there as a current employer. So, as I thought, employer has done nothing as yet. Estimated income for tax year, from that employment, £50,459. Actual income up to final Dec payslip £38,500.

Tried to update this, but it just says it's my ex employer who will notify them, and they have six weeks to do so. So, hardly instant.

It all depends when the employer files their Real Time Information report and how long it takes HMRC to process that data.

The employer should send the RTI data on or before when a payment is made but after that it's in HMRC's hands.

If the final payment was in December i.e. tax month 9, ending on 5 January 2025, it's a little surprising your record hasn't been updated yet.

But when you "finished work" isn't really important, it's when you were paid that is important.  So if that is in the current tax month that would be less of a surprise and you probably just need to wait a week or two.

Isn’t there an option on the personal tax account to update the employment information to show income has ceased from that source?

Yes but it doesn't let you submit a request if you have been paid recently (as in a payment HMRC already know about), you are told to wait for the information to come in from your employer.
