KITCHEN VINYL

Replacing existing kitchen vinyl. 4,4m long x 3 metres wide. Two cuts to go under washing machine and fridge. Quotes are for labour only.
First quote by a middle aged, all-round experienced builder. £800. He said it would take 2.5 days, him and his daughter as his assistant. In other words, 5 days work.
Second quote. £475 (7 hours at £67 per hour). Lad of 30 with no qualifications, no vehicle and no insurance, who ignored my request for his home or business address and for references. All I have is a name and a mobile number. He works full time for a big building company so can only "moonlight" at the weekend.
Third quote. Specialist flooring layer with 25 years experience. £210, said it will take him 2 to 3 hours.
My head is spinning with the huge difference between the three!

My granddaughter had kitchen lounge and 2 bathrooms done by 1 fitter in less than a day
so £210 is more like it and yes 2/3 hours3 -
Last one is in the right timeframe.
Any taking over a day are taking the previable 🤬Life in the slow lane1 -
Last one seems a much more realistic time frame1

If it's simply replacing new for old then I'd definitely go with the third quote. The only time we paid more was when the floor had to have levelling compound laid first.
Definitely have nothing to do with the second 'tradesman'.1 -
Sounds like a few hours job to me and not 5 days job!. Therefore, the 3rd builder seems reasonable.1

The third quote sounds right.
In comparison, i had a quick look at what the high street shop Tapi charge and Vinyl starts from £6.75 per m2 (see table here)

Oh gosh thanks for the replies. The guy who wants £800 for five days work is really out to scam me rotten isn't he?0

No matter what the quotes why would you employ a builder or a fly by night when a proper flooring layer is available?2
-
As above.
You want someone to lay a vinyl floor in your kitchen.
So you ask someone who does this all the time for a living.
Not even sure why you are asking builders in the first place.0 -
Same as Singhini I've been looking on Tapi today and noticed their fitting prices.
Putting your measurements in their calculator with the first piece of lino i clicked on gives this quote for fitting:Flooring £369.47Adhesive from £25.98Accessories allow £9.99Delivery & Care Package £39.00Fitting Arrangement Service* £13.20Estimated Total £457.64Please use our Request a Quote service if you would like an accurate quote.
Fitting* from £75.90
Fitting would be 75.90 +25.98 + 9.99 +39.0 +13.20 = 164.07 And so probably in the £200 ball park once bits and pieces added2
