How to uncross a cheque

I need to take a business cheque to a bank and receive cash. As all cheques are "crossed" to ensure payment into an account, I need to "uncross" the cheque so that I can get cash.
I have done this before years ago but forget how to correctly uncross a cheque. Can someone please remind me? I remember that the cheque must be made out to my name.

Is the account yours?
If not you cannot do this
In today's banking even if you could - most would insist that you pay the cheque in and then use a debit card to withdraw (or one of your own cheques if they knew you or you had sufficient ID).0 -
The issuer (ie not you) writes 'crossing cancelled' and signs nearby.2

think you used to write "open" on the crossings? but am sure that doesn't work these days - just pay it into and account and get the cash out from there1

1. Modern UK cheques are pre-crossed and printed with "account payee" instructions, which means they can only be paid into an account matching the payee's name..
2. The original cheque writer can cancel the crossing by writing "Crossing Cancelled" across the front of the cheque . This is strongly discouraged as it removes the built-in security protection.
The drawer should sign near the cancellation to authenticate it
3. Unable to deposit the cheque into a account matching the payee's name, the best alternative is to contact the cheque issuer and request an alternative payment method, such as a bank transfer.3 -
