What is a "Comp-liment"?

Options
What is a "Comp-liment" and how do you give them?

Apparently I have 2 such "Comp-liments" but I can only view one of them.

What are they for and how do they differ from "Thanks"?

I believe it's something that is specific to the Competitions board, but not sure how they are given or why...

    Oh.

I've never previously visited the Competitons board but I see posts have a "Comp-liment" button rather than a "Thanks" button.

If I click on the "Compliments" given icon on my profile I can only see one of two(?)

Ah.  I've just double-checked and I see that the thread where my post was comp-limented is now on the Competitions board.

It certainly wasn't originally when I commented on it.  It looks like it was moved from the Consumer Rights board.

    Thanks again

Isn't it in the nature of saying thanks for the answer & saving us the problem of having to solve it ourselves & having to actually buy the mag it was in.

    Erm... quite.

But why is the Competitions board different from every other board here?  (ie just a simple "Thanks" button?)

I'd assumed it was some kind of "Thanks" but couldn't understand the weird "Comp-liment" category

It's a play on the part word Comp. People who enter competitions are known as "compers". So MSE thought it fun for compers to "comp-liment" (compliment), instead of Thank, people who had posted competitions.

As mentioned, Comp-liments is the equivalent of 'Thanks' on the Competitions Time board.

We often do things a little differently there because our Compers are such prolific posters and power-users of features that their activity could easily drown out the activity of the rest of the forum.

Another example of differences - I've previously mentioned why Competitions Time posts aren't shown on the Latest Threads page. :)
