BT gift card - new customers only

BT says "We promise you'll never pay more than a new customer when you renew your contract. No exceptions."
Our contract ends in a few days, and there's a £50 gift card but only for new customers. How can they say "No exceptions" when a new customer effectively gets £50 off?

You aren't paying any more than a new customer. You just aren't getting the gift incentive.
Two different things and they are allowed to by the regulator.1 -
If I let my contract expire and then cancel, if my wife takes out a contract would she be considered a new customer?

You might also get hit with a reconnection charge for the service that was disconnected when your contract expired.0 -

You might be able to save more than £50 by switching supplier. And then in two years you'll be a new customer to BT and can switch back for the gift card!

Switch provider, use a cashback site as well and you will almost certainly get a cheaper deal and £50-200 if cashback and incentive.0

Shop around, you will get a lot more than that £50 back in 4 months alone and have customer service. Not forgetting the proverbial £3 annual price hikes every year starting this March.

As much as I'd prefer to stay with BT, I can get a far better package from Vodafone.
