He has had his passport stolen.

Is it possible to request a replacement from the Passport Office?
  • And yes, if he's in there a long time, the money could build up and I could then be up for tax on putative "gifts". But he has a £1,700 credit card debt that I will pay off as soon as there is enough in the account, and once it gets to, say, £10k, then I'll have to look at other solutions as one can only "gift" £3k pa without getting involved in tax.
If you are receiving money on his behalf which is more than his current needs, why not pay off the credit card debt in monthly instalments rather than waiting till you have the full amount.  You would thus save interest building up.  Or has the card issuer frozen this so it is fixed and not growing?

    Who is gifting what?
What do you mean by "who is getting what"? My son is getting Universal Credit which is now diverted into my personal account because I cannot succeed in opening a DWP nominee account. Is this what you mean?

As the UC is £800 pcm, and this month its up to £1,600, next month I will pay off the credit card in one payment - I got it frozen last year so its not increasing.

What I wanted to know was information about this "remote" ID problem - it seems to be that if the person cannot be present (and he can't, being in a secue mental hospital) then the "3 pieces of ID, on from first column and 2 from second" are trumpted by his not having photo ID. As I said, this seems very odd, and before wasting my time trying somewhere else, I'd like a bit of information, and I thought there would be bank people who could help.
Thanks anyway, I appreciate all your time you've given.

The question was about your reference to 'gifting' not 'getting'.
  • This was a very useful exercise for me, and its revealed 2 more ways forward. I will email Moneybox, I shall also investigate setting up a simple pre-paid card account (no interest,  but keeps his money separate from mine and current account interest  rate extremely low anyway); and this morning a moneysavingexpert article about Power of Attoreny came up on my search and gave a list of banks which offered PoA accounts and other useful information. I don't have PoA, but a bank used to this (unlike metrobank) may be able to help me more efficiently - as I said above, I have been put through the wringer by metrobank and eventually refused on the basis of information I told themon my very first visit. However I shall now try Santander, and see what happens with my DWP Nomineeship documentation.
Thanks again for trying to help me, I do appreciate it.
