Broadband and phone

Hi All,

I am trying to work out how to do a price comparison for broadband and phone contract.  This is for my elderly dad (hes 81).  He has been with Plusnet for years.  Not sure you can really fault the service, however there are issues with router which renews the IP address every night.  Due to the age of the router plusnet won't cover this.

As he is at the end of his contract (basic copper connection plus free calls to landlandline and mobile) as was trying to find an alternative.  However, the comparision sites only seem to offer one alternative which actually won't cover the area we are in.  I think he renewal offer is £40 per month (plus the usual inflation stuff).

Is the only other option using a voip setup (and a new number).  Or am I best trying to search through all the different ISP's to find a better deal?

Thanks in advance,

Mark :-)

I would try going to through a handful of ISPs directly.  EE are excellent.  Vodafone are good.  Zen are excellent but pricey.  BT would be worth a check too.

Most consumer broadband lines are on a Dynamic IP so the ISP can cycle the IP address'. 99% of consumers, changing IP, wont effect their usage. Is there a reason you need a static IP now after "years" ?

Maybe cheaper to stick with plusnet services and replace the router if you do have an issue.  This way you can retain the copper element as there is a stop sell on new broadband lines / telephones that require a copper line.

I am with Plusnet.  I got them to change the router because there was a better one they offered.  I don't think it took much persuading.  Google Plusnet routers.

Set up a VOIP account and equipment first before getting a new contract, you'll need a VOIP phone or two anyway, you can port your old number later, the whole situation is really confusing to most people not in the industry, but I've found that phone calls are much clearer than the old analogue and cheaper too, as long as you don't go to BT Digital Voice who charge like a wounded bull.
