These problems can be virtually eliminated by checking both your bank statements and energy bill/statements every month. (the bank to see if its been taken and the bill to see if it been received and added to your energy account)

It takes just 5-10 minutes and you can resolve any anomalies with either your bank or the energy company before it gets unmanageable. You can also check whether the bills are being estimated or actually using your readings Never assume that its correct, always check.

It's a good idea to download and save PDF copies as it makes back tracking much easier, especially nowadays if you don't have a fixed deal, and variable tariffs change every three months. You don't want to be paying higher prices unnecessarily because they put a random guess in and you didn't notice.

However as said above, you should have the money in your bank account if EDF haven't been taking it and you now have the opportunity to get it back on track with a January reading now that tariffs have just increased,

As an aside, wasn't it around July time last year that EDF migrated customers to Kraken billing system?
Doesn't help the OP, but perhaps something went wrong when the migration took place. Especially if the OP has multiple meters as suggested in an earlier reply.

Hopefully the “extra” money is still in the bank and you can just transfer it through in a lump sum.
If the OP can't pay it all in one go, then the OP can make any partial payment (hopefully larger than the monthly DD would have been) of their own volition, even the old fashioned cheque sent to EDF every month if the DD is not functioning as it should.

For the OP to make some payment will be far less likely to result in aggressive recovery action by EDF.

If on annualised DD - EDF may attempt to recover in next review.

But that still leaves op looking to find say 2/3rds of past levels for 8m missing on top of current costs.

Fine if money in account, but others do spend to account balance regularly  - an extra treat for themselves or the kids without looking at their statements.

But given the supplier may be culpable by not requesting funds (caveat - see post above re need for new mandate on new account system) - a request for more like 24m should not fall on death ears.

They wouldn't be the first supplier to have some fall through the cracks when upgrading accounts system - e.g. B Gas, EOn when split off EOn Next which iirc also Krakken based etc etc.

I still find it hard to believe that people don't check their bank accounts for six months or more. Mine gets checked every couple of weeks, especially if theres an extra payment to be made and it gets reconciled every month when the statement is issued. Same with my credit cards and leccy bills. Apart from cash taken out as pocket money I know where every penny gets spent.

I can understand being lazy about energy bills but I do like to know whether my salary/pension is going in as it should be,  and I'm even more interested in who is taking money out and whether they are taking out the correct amount.

I would have thought that most people would notice something like £100-£150 or more a month isn't being taken or that the balance is increasing by that amount. By my reckoning six months at say £100-£150 a month should leave a healthy excess balance of between £600-£900 more than I'd expect.

Perhaps its just me but I'd be a bit worried if my account was increasing at that sort of rate, unless there's so much cash floating around that an extra hundred or so a month is just lost in the noise.  :/

No regrettably never got supply sorted .  It was going to cost more changing meters than having 2 standing charges!
So I’ve been putting in regular meter readings every month … can’t believe I missed the fact they hadn’t taken payments …
Out of interest -  what are you paying per kwh and per day in s/c's ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

I pay 26.90 per unit at 60p standing charge on both my meters.
By the way … everyone is critical of me not checking … can’t believe I haven’t but have had a lot of very difficult personal problems in my life in last few months so guess that’s no excuse but wasnt actually expecting them to stop taking money as I didn’t stop the direct debit myself.

I check all my bank statements.  If I see payments to the usual companies, that's OK.  Or if it's places I regularly shop.  Everything unusual gets checked.
But what I would never notice is something that isn't there.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
