What do I do ?  Been putting regular meter readings in and just thought the direct debit was ok. Always was but since July they haven’t taken the payments.  Really panicking now .. feeling so stressed !

When you ring them give them meter readings.

PS are you still at the former Guest House. Did you sort your Business/Domestic supply?

No regrettably never got supply sorted .  It was going to cost more changing meters than having 2 standing charges!
So I’ve been putting in regular meter readings every month … can’t believe I missed the fact they hadn’t taken payments …

Can’t decide if it’s the banks fault or edf

Or yours.  While you don't originate the dd request, you are responsible for reconciling your statement.

On the plus side, at least you know why your balance is higher now and if you have an interest bearing account, you have gained some interest on it.

Have you looked at your EDF online account? There is a possibility you've a big credit balance and they're not taking your direct debit to reduce it. It would seem odd if they've been expecting a payment and haven't contacted you when it didn't arrive

It’s a DD so it will have been EDF failing to ask for it.

Hopefully the “extra” money is still in the bank and you can just transfer it through in a lump sum. Once you’ve straightened this out though, I’d go through 6 months or so bank statements to be sure there’s nothing else gone awry, and just set aside a few minutes each week going forwards to run an eye over your online banking to be sure all is as it should be.
