Delayed by over 11 hours on NYE... :'(

OK so, first things first, via expedia, I bought a return flight from Emriates (yes, all on one ticket/booking), FROM Da Nang, Vietnam > KUL > DXB > to LGW, which departed on 9th December 2024. This part of the journey was absolutely fine. I spent 3 weeks in the UK visiting family.
My return flight, 30th Dec from LGW > DXB > KUL > DAD ... I arrived at DAD 11 hours later than expected on 31/12.
So with these flight arrangements, first off, would i be eligable? as the return flight did originate in the UK, but that first flight was the cause of all the subsequent delays - LGW had a luggage belt failure which means the LGW -> DXB flight was delayed over 1 hour. This in turn meant I missed my DXB connection, where Emirates put me in an airport hotel overnight and I got a replacement flight from DXB -> SGN -> DAD.
Is there a claim here, as I'm unsure due to my journey originating outside of the UK originally, but returning FROM the UK.
I feel like I should be compensated, the whole return leg was filled with anxiety, and far from the relaxing journey I was hoping for with Emirates. (the staff were excellent FWIW).
p.s. I'm a UK citizen/passport holder if important

This is not about the entire journey but about your return leg. I believe this flight could be considered as it starts in the UK.You post suggests that the cause of your delay was a LGW issue rather than something in the airline's control. This would be grounds to deny your claim but it can't hurt to take a chance and make a claim.0

Yes, this was on a flight originating from the UK so the law is applicable. Do put in a claim, and probably the airline will explain that it was the airport's fault and give you an apology and a few miles, explaining that it was all the airport's fault. Once you have had a reply from them, return here and post what they say and we can advise whether it is worth challenging their excuse (probably not, from what you say).
You had a right to "care" during the delay, so if you had to spend anything on food and/or airport transfers do claim the amounts from them.

I rather suspect the airline will claim the cause was outside their control.1
