I have a Goblin cylinder vacuum in the loft.  I haven't been able to track down when that model was made, but it was almost certainly in the 1950's.  I only stopped using it because the suction was pretty weedy when compared with modern cleaners.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I moved 25 years ago and brought the Dyson with me. It has an easy life now just doing the upstairs, I have a newer one for downstairs.

We have 2 Miele ones, upstairs and downstairs, the oldest is from 1988, and the “ cat and dog” one is from around 2010, both still work fine.

We have a Miele which must be at least 15 years old and still going strong.
Is there anything you have done to service it?

Absolutely nothing for years.  Packs of bags used to have a filter pad with them but that seems to have stopped years ago.

My Dyson only lasted 5 years. I cleaned it regularly but one day it started smoking and tripped my electrics.
😲 Though having looked on ours it states about having a 5 year guarantee... I'm guessing yours was a newer model which I can't say I believe are as good a quality as the older ones.
We bought our animal Dyson (dc32) in 2010 and it's still in use. It handled normal vacuuming as well as the chinchillas hay they flung out of their cage when they were alive. Got blocked rather often with the hay but we became a dab hand at unclogging it over the years. We weren't, and aren't, too good at remembering to clean out or change the filter the recommended every 3 months either.
It has an easier life now with only really being used in the bedroom that has carpet and to clean the rug we have in the living room, as the other floors can be swept with ease, but it still has good suction and seems like it will last a while yet.

If it's lost suction, then it could be a filter or the actual bag itself. We were gifted a similar one a couple of years ago but couldn't find any replacement bags so had to carefully clean up the existing one, and strip it down as best I could to clean where I could. We do have 4 vacs though, so this one is only used for cleaning up after DIY type work. If it's not turning on, then it could be the motor. Maybe explain what the issue is?

Out of our 4, we have 2 that are one year old, one that is about 5 years old, and this type one which we think is about 10 years old. If you can find and can afford someone to service them it might be worth a try, but I generally just have a tinker with ours, just make sure they are unplugged. Our Vax can be stripped down quite a lot without any tools.

I had a Dyson DC04, which was an unreliable and appallingly-made piece of junk, until we got a Numatic Henry 11 years ago. The Henry actually failed for the first time this week; the little circuit board that makes the silly turbo button work burnt out. I only ever use it on full power anyway, so I bypassed the board and binned it - repair cost £0 :)

While I was in there I gave everything a clean and checked the motor brushes, which had plenty left on them. Those and the main switch are just about all that's left that could go wrong with it... I envisage that it'll still be going in another 20 years. Definitely recommended.

The Dyson DC04 is an upright vacuum cleaner that was launched in 1998. I bought a used one, its had a new motor, spindle and recently a new pipe. I have a spare too. It's still not working properly, I need to find out why and fix it.

We "retired" our first Miele (Solution 500) at the 25 year mark.  It had been back once for a service and they replaced all the "broken bits" the dog created over the years.  It was retired to cleaning up on a house refurbishment and sadly got a cracked case when something fell on it and it was beyond economic repair (although Miele said they would fix it!).  It had been on car/garage duty for a few years anyway.  When we moved into our new house we bought 2 new ones - one Cat/Dog for downstairs, and one C2 Complete for upstairs in the sales (around the time the EU insisted on lower power ratings etc. so they were in the sale cheap).  We've been here 14 years, and they have been faithful servants and continue to operate as well as they day they were new.   Always genuine bags, change the motor filter, and once every 2 years change the HEPA filter.  They just go on and on and on......We did buy a cordless Vax to avoid the plugging in etc., but honestly it's not even in the same league (despite claiming to be the best of the best and reviewing very well at Which) - it moves dirt around well, and shows it whiszzing round in the chamber, but it's like comparing an apple to an armadillo....sure they start with the same letter of the alphabet but that's about it....
