Finishing the month on 31/25 please cathybird. Thank you. X
This is my 7th consecutive Dry January. I have not, this year, done it for charity but I'll probably make a donation.
In January 2019 I white knuckled my way through the month and in February returned to drinking as much as before (perhaps more). I was in my early sixties and aware of the harm I was doing (had already done?) to my health. I wanted to cut down, not least because I found out I was to be a grandma and wanted to be around for her. I succeeded after a fashion in cutting down slightly through March but was finding it very difficult on my own.
In April 2019 I discovered this thread, then run by Shaggydoo, and other people who were trying to cut down or stop drinking. People have come and gone and cathybird is now at the helm but pledging a number of dry days in a month, grown up merit badges when you reach certain targets and knowing other people are trying too has been incredibly helpful to me. It has been a huge part of why I can confidently call myself a very moderate drinker now.
Of course I needed to put in the work. In my case it was asking myself why I felt that alcohol improved a negative situation
or helped when I was: bored, stressed or unhappy. It doesn't, it frequently makes it worse, but until my "lightbulb" moment quite late in life I couldn't see that. Not drinking for joyful positive occasions was more difficult until I realised that it is the people and places that bring me joy. I don't need an alcoholic drink to prove to myself that I am having a good time. I might occasionally have one but it isn't necessary. Sober birthdays, weddings, births, successes etc are no less special.
I'm really sorry for my novella, please feel free to skip the bulk of it. I was just feeling reflective and thankful about the nearly seven years I have been part of this community and wanted to write it down. X
