Installing Sky at new house before current occupiers contract has ended?

I'm moving in with a friend at end of January and since I'm only 6 months into a 24 month contract with Sky broadband, I'm bringing it to the new house.

My friend does have an existing Virgin broadband but it expires at the end of February and she isn't renewing. I said we'd just disconnect the Virgin router and put it to one side until the contract ends. We don't need to do anything else right, or advise Sky about the existing Virgin connection when they come to install it? It won't cause any problems having 2 seperate internet providers to one house for a month?

Is it proper Virgin Media fibre or is it VM over Openreach cabling?

Assuming its proper VM then no issues beyond the paying double. It's worth noting you arent on a 24 month contract but a continuous contract with a minimum 24 months term. They will be on similar and so the contract doesn't just end at the end of the minimum period, they will need to serve their 30 days notice (or whatever it is for VM these days) else they'll get billed for the next month etc.

If however its OpenReach then there will be a problem because Sky will request OpenReach to transfer the line to them which will automatically notify VM of the early termination.

Firstly, the Virgin contract wont end, the minimum contract term and and it will move to a rolling monthly contract. So you need to cancel with Virgin giving the appropriate notice period.
It wont be a problem having the Sky service alongside the Virgin service.

Virgin dont use Openreach network they use their own cable network or Nextfibre if they offer VM FTTP ,  so you can get your Sky service fitted ( via Openreach ) whenever it suits you ( and avoids  ETC ) VM will not be advised of this  (  it’s got nothing to do with them  )  that’s why your friend, around the end of January start of February needs to serve notice to Virgin to quit so that will end around the required time ….you can get your Sky service installed as quickly as it suits you , as stated , having 2 networks in one address is not an issue and doesn’t cause issues, in fact if Sky is installed before the VM has ended , it’s no big deal and actually may be a good idea as you will know you won’t have a break in service.

When did VM stop using OR for areas that they dont have their own network?

But yes, if they have stopped offering via OR then makes life much simpler

Virgin and Sky BB come into the house over different cables and connections, so you can have both or either.
I currently have CityFibre and Virgin connections (neither are OpenReach-based).
I previously have had Sky and Virgin BB connections at the same time.

As they are different infrastructure you request the Sky contract to be migrated (you may get a new install fee from OpenReach) as they may need to do additional work. This can then be installed and up and running alongside the Virgin service.

You can then give notice on the Virgin network to terminate any time after the date Sky goes live. This may incur an early redemption fee, but you would pay it if you delayed until the end of the contract anyway (and the redemption fee should be less than the full monthly fee).
