Do a subject data request with MIB, I understand there is a fee.

If it's a subject access request that should be free I believe.
I think the difficulty is going to be that the OP isn’t the data subject (and I presume no POA if they also can’t access spouse’s bank accounts).
I am going to print off the POA forms later today. We discussed this yesterday and my husband wants this done urgently so I will take them to hospital.
you'll need a certificate provider so maybe take a friend to do this - just checking though, if he doesn't know who the car is insured with, is he mental competent enough to sign and understand PoA forms?
Although to be fair, I don’t have a scooby who my household insurance is with unless I search for the paperwork or go back to the broker. Changed too many times and currently have the memory of a goldfish!
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

It’s going to take a few weeks at least for a power-of-attorney to come back from the office of the public guardian.
While you’re waiting, you can do an ordinary/general  power-of-attorney which is only effective while he has capacity but which you can use straight away.

This link gives you the wording and some explanation, but if you search online, there’s probably templates if you want a proper form.

that is really interesting and could solve the problems here, could also be useful for people while waiting for LPA to be registered / track down cert provider / get everyone in the same room etc etc - just wondering, I know banks etc are used to LPAs - are they as ready to accept this ?

Sorry, I assumed from the OP that he wasn't that capable. Can this not be shortcircuited by him helping you log into the bank/credit card accounts which he would have used to pay?

If he is capable of consenting to POA and signing forms etc is he not able to tell you either who your insured with or his password for his emails for you to check.

Alternatively many people save passwords or apps open automatically (usually the case for emails) you could try accessing that way

My husband is in hospital after suffering a very bad stroke so I am in a muddle.
he always insures my car and pays for it.  He shops around every year to find best price and I have no idea who I am insured with.  I have been all through our paperwork and the last info I could find was 2023.  I rang the company and it ended then and we did not renew. He obviously did it with another company.

i tried Ask MID and that confirms I am insured but no further details.

I have looked through loads of emails but can’t find anything.  We have various bank accounts but as you know, most statements are online now. Also I feel they don’t send reminders anymore.

what else can I do to find out?  Thanks.
Is there a particular urgency to find out who it is? The MID confirmed it's insured so it's not a major problem right now.

Do you have access to his emails/bank accounts etc?

Never tried to use one myself but they tend to be used when people are going away on holiday or working abroad and  financial things that need sorting out while they are away, so they shouldn’t be new to banks.

Absolutely competent, he understands everything we say to him.  We have several vehicles as well as a business plus our house and another small property we rent out so we probably have more paperwork than average.  Thanks though.

I keep a copy of the policy in the glove box along with the service book and breakdown recovery details etc.

Probably a good place for a thorough search.
I will do that Neil. Thank you very much. Nothing in glove box though.

Thanks for the info on your other post Elsien regarding the other form which I had never heard of. Could be of use to others as well. For my late Mum’s POA it came through in about two weeks so fingers crossed this does too.
