Car Insurance - help, who am I with?

My husband is in hospital after suffering a very bad stroke so I am in a muddle.
he always insures my car and pays for it.  He shops around every year to find best price and I have no idea who I am insured with.  I have been all through our paperwork and the last info I could find was 2023.  I rang the company and it ended then and we did not renew. He obviously did it with another company.

i tried Ask MID and that confirms I am insured but no further details.

I have looked through loads of emails but can’t find anything.  We have various bank accounts but as you know, most statements are online now. Also I feel they don’t send reminders anymore.

what else can I do to find out?  Thanks.

have you any idea when the last 2023 one finished - just thinking that there might be a payment from an account around that time to another company for approx the amount it was before  (or a bit more) - the reference might not be obvious but it would be a start and someone here might know what company it is

So you don't have a claim phone number stored in your phone in case of an accident? Any paperwork in the car?
If you know the renewal date then I'd look at emails around that date and the month before, and bank/ credit card statements for the same dates. Search emails for likely terms. Log in to comparison sites? Notebooks with best quotes?
Do a subject data request with MIB, I understand there is a fee.

If it's a subject access request that should be free I believe.

Also, if it’s due for renewal, you should get a reminder for about 4 weeks beforehand. Although that’s no good if you need it in the meantime.

I think the difficulty is going to be that the OP isn’t the data subject (and I presume no POA if they also can’t access spouse’s bank accounts).

I am going to print off the POA forms later today. We discussed this yesterday and my husband wants this done urgently so I will take them to hospital.

you'll need a certificate provider so maybe take a friend to do this - just checking though, if he doesn't know who the car is insured with, is he mental competent enough to sign and understand PoA forms?

I keep a copy of the policy in the glove box along with the service book and breakdown recovery details etc.

Probably a good place for a thorough search.

It’s going to take a few weeks at least for a power-of-attorney to come back from the office of the public guardian.
While you’re waiting, you can do an ordinary/general  power-of-attorney which is only effective while he has capacity but which you can use straight away.

This link gives you the wording and some explanation, but if you search online, there’s probably templates if you want a proper form.
