Next week we're having fibre installed by Trooli. They have sent us the router to be installed which is a Technicolor DGA4135. We have a wifi extender with our existing BT broadband, whch is a TP Link TL-WPA7617. Should we be able to get the TP link to work with the new broadband router? Trooli mention renting their wifi extenders at £4 a month each, but don't fancy paying that.

I saw a mention elsewhere of changing a new router name and password to the existing name and password for the existing BT network to make life easier. Should that be possible, or am I misunderstanding something I read.  We're not very technical, and anything to ease the transition from old to new would be welcome.  We haven't cancelled the BT contract yet.

TIA for any help.

So you have a powerline wifi extender which has one device physically connected to the router via an ethernet adapter and into the power socket. Then another which is plugged into the socket and configured with the same wifi SSID and password as the main wifi network.

Changing the wifi SSID and password to be the same on the new router and moving the ethernet cable to plug into the port should mean that all devices just reconnect without any issues.

Not familiar with the ISP or router model but in theory it should work. Bit of an old fashioned way of doing it but if it has worked successfully for you the why not. If the ISP broadband speed has increased significantly then you may not see that reflected on the devices connected to the extender, but see if that is the case first.
  • Is the new router going to be in the same physical location as the old? If so then there should be no problems duplicating your BT setup.

Have you considered where the new fibre service will terminate in your dwelling and whether this is a convenient position for the new router? Are there convenient power points to power the new fibre terminal box (ONT), your new router and the TP powerline extender?

Just as a follow up on this in case anybody else has this query, the TP link is working fine with our new router.
