Communication on the chat was poor, but the information at checkout is clear - one mattress. Logically, how could the delivery van start the day with x mattresses to deliver and have the capacity to finish the day with 2, 3 or 4 x mattresses.
  • Firstly, they’re not comparable.  The council will have a subsidised service primarily designed to reduce fly-tipping, and to stop people being daft and overloading their cars on a tip run.  The retailer is a commercial entity and will have to cover the cost of labour, transport and the disposal fee to the council.  And has been explained earlier, the space on the van taken up by an old mattress is one less new mattress they can deliver on that run.

Secondly, I don’t know how you value your time, but I suspect you wouldn’t consider it worth it to drive to my house to collect four mattresses and take them to the tip for me if I offered you £54, let alone £26.

I think the best outcome you were ever going to get in this situation is a refund of the £54, and that looks to have been ruled out.  If your council will collect the extra three mattresses for £26 then £26 is the extent of your “loss”.  As you say, not worth going to court over and frankly, not worth your time worrying about.
Well, if I was already coming to your house to deliver something and already visiting the tip to get rid of other mattresses, it sounds like the easiest £54 I'd ever earned!

However, all these logistics are up to the business. It's not my job to work this stuff out. All I wanted was for them to do what they said. They've failed to do that and refused to refund the money they took from me via false information. I find that to be pretty dodgy and dishonest.

On it's own, it not a big deal but these things add up.

However, I'm certainly not going to worry about it today.

Merry Christmas and thanks to everyone who's replied to the thread!

They won't be delivering to a tip. Many local councils charge companies for a licence to do this, which are not transferable.
So they will be taking them back to depot & they will them be disposed of at their end.

Our local council is £30 for a max of 5 items. But you can only do this 4 times a year. Take a trip to local tip & it is free.
    Life in the slow lane
  • Update:

They have agreed to refund the £54.

Each email I've sent has been replied to by a different person. Not sure if that's just the luck of the draw or if it's been moved up the chain of command. Either way - got there in the end!

Thanks to everyone for their input,
