Netflix

I have a "standard with advertisements" Netflix plan. One of the shows I have been watching for several weeks now has a message stating I need to upgrade to watch all shows. I feel a bit annoyed about being forced after watching for several weeks but I will cancel before being forced. Has anyone else encountered this? Does not seem right to me.

  • Are you sure it's not the app on your TV that needs to be upgraded?  My 10-year old smart TV can't run the latest version of the app so the standard with adverts package won't run on it.  Not a problem because I moved to a firestick some time ago, but it may be the problem you have?
  • Not the same, but I have the basic, with adverts, which works perfectly using a streaming device, eg. Amazon Firestick.
However, if I try to use the Netflix app. on my "smart" t.v. there's a message that I need to upgrade to a no advert service to watch anything.

Didn't even get that option on mine.  The only service that now works is Amazon, everything else has stopped. My once "smart TV" is now simply a TV.

  • Have you spoken to Netflix about this? As far as I know, Netflix doesn’t lock specific shows behind paywalls, but just the quality of the stream/‘added’ features.

Without knowing exactly the message said it makes me think along the lines of the other people on this thread - you need to update the app rather than upgrade your plan.

    Which show?
How are you watching these. Computer, TV or something else?

  • Thanks, everyone. I managed to contact Netflix and apparently they have a fault and engineers are trying to resolve the issue - no timeframe yet. I appreciate the help esp. as newbie here!

Which show is it? Others can probably check if they can watch it therefore if it's an app or subscription issue.

Netflix does load up and I am logged in automatically to my account. It's only when I select something to watch the message appears and the selection does not play. The t.v. (Samsung) is a few years old now, but most apps to work. My5 doesn't connect and to date is the only service to not function at all. No issue using Firestick.
Not the end of the world!

That's the thing about "smart" TVs ... they tend to only be smart for so long. I reckon a Fire TV will remain "smart" for longer as there tend to be fairly regular Fire OS updates for them. (I have a Toshiba Fire TV running Fire OS 7 and it still gets updates. My Firestick 4k Max Gen 2, which I use upstairs or when away from home, runs Fire OS 8).

Even with a brand new expensive TV I have always found AppleTV and FireStick (have both devices) work better out the box than the TV and as time goes on the gap gets ever wider.  Even if it did eventually stop well its only £34 to get a replacement rather than £1,500 for a new TV

Miss the days where companies used to sell screens as an alternative to a TV as the TV just has more things to go wrong which I will never use but can kill the whole device.
