Sixt AVOID - Car Hire Excess

In Italy its third party only I discovered last week. So you must have excess cover for entire vehicle - loss or damage or buy their waiver product. Seems to be all over europe.

  • There are some good Youtubes on people explaining the good the bad and the ugly with car rentals in the place you are intending to go. Autoreisen in Gran Canaria has an all inclusive cover without excess for a few euro extra for instance.

What is the basis for your 'discovery', something you were told at the hire desk as the reason for unavoidable purchase of their waiver product..?

Did you book the car via a UK website? If so, it will have come with CDW as standard. In any case, if the car didn't come with CDW, you could always buy a policy which includes it from this website: https://www.moneymaxim.co.uk/app/engine/car-hire-excess-insurance

Sixt is one of the more established and reputable car hire companies. Have used many times and not had any issues.

Nonsense. Your hire includes basic damage waiver, but normally the excess is around £1,500. However, you can buy a third party excess insurance product much more cheaply than the waiver product. Please do some research - on this very website there is plenty of info. This is also not just Italy. It's standard practice.

Edit to add: I hired a car in Italy last year and purchased third party excess cover. Unsurprisingly the car hire company managed to discover some damage which, despite my comprehensive photos, had not been spotted, but it was fully covered by my third party excess insurance which cost me around £30.

This isn't the case though is it? I think zest provide excess waiver cover, but just as with any other 3rd party product like this, the rental company won't officially recognise it and will still require somewhere upwards of €1000 held on a credit card? OK, it's technically not a payment, but it still catches many people out.
