Just waiting for them to start talking to each other so when they see I am cooking spaghetti that the washing machine sets itself to the shirts programme with heavy soiling.3 -

Dont forget that the Chinese are spying on you as well and need to know what you are cooking and when so they can shut it down.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
What I have never understood is what anybody has to gain from all this
all joking aside, supposing you did have a smart fridge, a smart air fryer, a smart door mat, a smart door knocker, smart light bulbs, smart sink - whatever and let's say everybody was listening including the Chinese
well what would they possibly gain from all the data - or maybe I am being naive?0 -

The chances are, if data is being gathered, then its data for datas sake to explore the art of the possible. Being able to hear what people are discussing in the privacy of their own homes in principle (if you can deal with the volumes of data) could be great or dark... candid responses to adverts or tv, better targeting of ads, blackmail material, corporate espionage, national espionage.
Could simply be money, you've no idea what to do with the data but with billions of zettabyte of data someone may be willing to pay for it.
On mainly unrelated matters, I've done two projects for two different firms, one a global insurer wanting a new data capture tool for details on the properties they were being asked to quote on and a second a UK company offering black boxes to insurers for PAYG motor insurance. In both cases the businesses felt they'd be able to sell the data for considerable sums to local and national governments. The former had an internal business case around master data management so if next year you're asked to quote on the same building but its missing details you can reuse last years data. the blackbox company was 100% speculation though, no commercial activity, giving away its product in exchange for psudonomised data1 -
Why is anyone talking to their air fryer?
What actual functions / purpose is there for having an air fryer connected to the internet?matelodave said:when those who feel that you should be eating healthy stuff find out that you are cooking spaghetti, they'll be round to confiscate your saucepan.
Pasta is rich in complex carbohydrates and an ideal energy source for endurance sports as the carbs are easily digested to provide the first source of energy taken by the muscles.0 -

It might be that the brands do other products that do have voice capabilities and its cheaper for them to bulk buy single components that service both products than it is to split the purchase and have some with mics and some without. Obviously the press are implying maybe it's the Chinese state spying in peoples homes.
Presumably the purpose/function is the same as any other cooking device? Remote start/stop, see what duration is left and alerts. The old one we had had a single area but multi-cooking function so tell it you are doing fish fingers and chips and it will beep at you half way through to tell you to put the fish fingers in, clearly if it was connected to an app you could be alerted when not in the kitchen rather than come in after getting distracted and find the chips cooked to perfection and the fish fingers still raw.
It's like most smart functions, they have a use case but probably not worth paying a premium for. That said our dishwasher warns when it's out of salt, rinse aid but the wife is bad at reading the messages. When she complains things arent as clean as normal it's useful to go into the app and see she was told a week ago that the rinse aid was out.1 -
The whole concept would make a great plot for Black Mirror0

Perhaps, Air-Fryer users are an indicator of being in the "elite" group of UK citizens so singled out as the source of all the top secret stuff. I wouldn't know as I do not mix in those circles (either "air-fryer user" or "elite"). Does Prince Andrew have an air-fryer? That could be the give away clue...
Anyway, DGG, how is your elite sports training progressing with all that spaghetti being cooked in an air fryer? What does fried spaghetti even taste like?
Our dishwasher has a light on the unit when it needs salt / rinse aid - far easier than an app in my mobile.1 -

Personally, not convinced and think there are more basic explanations. Also unsure why network traffic cannot be monitored to see if its plausible that its recording and transmitting audio as inevitably it would result in a much higher level of data than you'd expect a device in standby to be sending.
Dont have an air fryer so can't help you... was surprised that rice noodles puff up though when fried.
As I say, she clears the message as the device won't start when they are first indicating they are out which is why you have to fall back to the app. Obvs when Im doing it I see the message, add the salt, clear the message and carry on without reference to the app.0
