EDF energy - no supply to property and refusing to help

EDF are the supplier, we had an electrician out to the flat yesterday who claimed it was not the electrics causing the issue. EDF are refusing to attend the property as on their side the meter is fine. There was confusion on whether it was prepayment or not. Apparently it used to be but previous occupant changed it to direct debit.

Have had no electricity, heating, hot water (all run off electrics) since Monday. Had to stay in a hotel last night.

After spending 5 hours on the phone to them yesterday, they called at 8pm to say they were sending someone out this morning at 8am so stay tuned, I like to think someone will turn up..

Spoke to national grid who said they pinged the meter and it pinged back - he suggested if no luck with EDF then to get another electrician out for a second opinion.

Has anyone got any advice? I’ve been battling with EDF over this and it’s becoming a bit of a stressful time..!

When you press the buttons on the meter what shows up on the screen?

So EDF say it should say ‘press a/b to enable electricity’ after I’ve pressed the green button (A) which it doesn’t at all - I’ve flicked through every option on the meter and nothing. They are then stumped and can’t comment further.

If I do press A I eventually come to a credit balance of 72p or something - EDF are saying I’m in credit and for them that’s enough to close the ticket down and not take it further.

When I first moved in (earlier this week) the meter looked like a prepayment one, neighbour had the same meter next to mine and said his was. EDF are saying it’s not and that the previous occupant changed it from a prepayment to a direct debit billing.

I apologise as I’m a complete novice to this stuff (recently divorced and ex husband dealt with it all!)
  • What is the exact model of your meter? Some of them can be a bit weird but there are a couple of people on here who know them inside out.

Are you 100% sure you are checking the correct meter ?  How many meters are there ?  It would not be the first time meters in flats have been mixed up.

You could try calling 105, which is a free call.  Might not achieve anything as there's no local outage, but no harm in trying.
  • Thanks, have just tripled checked it’s definitely my meter which it is.

No one has arrived from EDF as expected.

Landlord has sent another electrician out for a second opinion so that I can use this when I try to battle with EDF come Monday. Can’t seem to find any weekend contact details for EDF.

What exactly did the electrician say, did he say that the meter wasn't supply power to the house?

That's something of a warning flag. Mixed up meters are relatively common if they're in an external cupboard or or meter room rather than inside the flat.

Sorry to seem pedantic, but what makes you so certain?
  • Are there any other meters than just yours and the neighbours in the same area?
