Received our STW water bill today, previously they added about £8 for road drainage, today they have now added a standing charge for water and another for waste water adding approximately £25 to the bill ?

For what period?
For ours, with United Utilities, it's £23.99 a year for supply and £113.64 a year for waste water, the latter is actually via Dwr Cymru but billed by United Utilities0 -
I'm with Severn Trent and expecting a bill anytime soon so I will let you know
I'm metered0 -
according to their 2023-24 info standing charges were out then as per this quote:
"Sewerage standing charges (b) a standing charge for the meter measuring the supply of water to the premises (see Table 3). Unless we agree otherwise these charges will be due on demand apportioned for each billing period, or on a daily basis for periods less than or greater than the normal billing period"
So perhaps they have not been billing you in the past, but now are - I'd suggest you give them a ring and find out.0 -
My bill has arrived to September 2024, standing charges applied in 2023 also
The standing charge amounts to £41.98
Total bill is £69.27. (6 months)
So Not only am I paying more standing charge on electric I am on water too0 -
I stand corrected I have checked 2023 bill it does include standing charge, STW have changed the format of latest bills.

Road drainage is usually the responsibility of the local Highways Authority (Local Council) and costs covered via Council Tax.
If it is surface water drainage from your own property (your roof / driveway / patio and such like), that is a different matter and may connect to the local foul sewer. If none of your surface water drainage connects to foul sewer - and you will be encouraged to avoid this connection - there is a discount from the bill. It is surface water drainage entering foul sewer networks that gets Feargal Sharkey on the telly.0
