EON meter - no gas supply - unique circumstances

Similar for my parents and my case with BG (now with Ombudsman). They moved into a property with no gas applicances but it had a gas meter and we were advised it was our job to arrange its removal.
The account the meter was on was immediately assigned to our name (it had been "The Occupier") when the request to remove it was made with BG and then all the standing charges were applied. I rang to request the meter removal and it was removed swiftly by BG (FOC).
We paid the standing charges from move-in date up to the date of meter removal in agreement with BG, but invoices kept coming. Invoices challenged, charges reversed, account closed, then magically account re-opens and so on and so forth, month after month, requiring yet more interventions with BG S.Africa! As of today the Ombudsman is now on the case as 8 weeks have passed since I raised the formal complaint about incorrect billing.
I would certainly get the meter removed. There may or may not be liability for the standing charges to-date, but getting it removed draws a line on any more charges being applied, but keep any eye out for incorrect future bills. I certainly would be as cooperative as possible to keep them onside and hopefully waive the St charges and hopefully remove the meter at no cost. As for pretending to be someone you're not - that’s not a great idea unless you want to exacerbate your situation, way beyond where you find yourself now.2
