Get a wire brush (or nylon brush) attachment for a rechargeable drill and very gently apply that to remove the roots. I did this on some trellis which have been overgrown with ivy and it came up looking fine.

I found you need to do both, spray the leaves and cut the roots.

We cut a section out of the main trunks and sprayed the leaves. After 6 months and 3 spraying sessions, the stuff was still alive, those creepers suck water from the air!

We then peeled it back off the walls. Now we are left with millions of vile little strands attached to the wall and don't know how to get those off.
a very strong power washer 200 bar and 16 to 17 litres water per minute will remove the remains but do a test patch first to make sure your stone or bricks can take the water pressure and hold the lance about 2 feet away at first then closer to see how it goes i have removed a lot over the years hope this helps, regards martyn

i,ve been told hammering a copper nail into the root will kill off any unwanted ivy, i've just got to find out where to get one from, and try it out, so will let anyone one know where to get one from and wether or not it works when i've done the job
you can get copper nails from a roofing supplier as they use them to nail on slates the (old way) hope this helps. regards martyn
