Don't know if this is in the right place but I have some climbing ivy growing up the front of my house and it is slowing creeping along to next door . What is the best way to kill it off ? I cut it all back at the roots during the Spring and then put weed killer on it but the blasted stuff has grown back . Thanks

I'd be glad of this information as well - I ignored all organic principles in spring 2007 as been trying to get rid of ivy for years and cut it right back and applied tree stump killer stuff. Some is still growing back!0

Dig out the roots, its the only way with Ivy..
Make sure you get it all too or it'll grow back from nothing.

What weedkiller did you use?
I used a systemic one [like Roundup], that will travel down to roots. It does take a while but it does work, or try a brushwood killer for same effect
With both you need to spray / paint the leaves with the solutionEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I found you need to do both, spray the leaves and cut the roots.
We cut a section out of the main trunks and sprayed the leaves. After 6 months and 3 spraying sessions, the stuff was still alive, those creepers suck water from the air!
We then peeled it back off the walls. Now we are left with millions of vile little strands attached to the wall and don't know how to get those off.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. Napalm is the only sure way to get rid of it
I never understand why poeple buy ivy since the slightest cutting will take root and spread in all directions before you know it.
As already stated i would remove the whole plant and dig out the roots.
I would also consider using a bio degradable root killer to be sure the stuff doesnt come back . Even then your likely to miss a bit but at least it will minimise the potential for it to regenerate.0 -
Get a paint stripper heat gun to burn it backNothing to see here :beer:0

I used a box of stuff called Root out . Cost £5 a box , but this stuff really is the bane of my life and just keeps coming back
I must add I did this during the summer when the weather was fairly warm and stayed outside to make sure it had all dried up as I have a cat and dog .Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .

Perseverance I think!
If it's on masonry, whatever you do, don't just try and pull it off straight away, it will likely take the mortar/render with it. Cut the trunk at ground level and let the leaves on the wall die first, it will come away much easier. It could take months to die off the wall but is better than having to re-point!
The stump? I just used super strength round up, seems to have worked.
And the suckers left on the wall afterwards? Even an angle grinder struggled with them!!!New year, no debt! Debt free date - 02/01/07 :j :j :j0 -
i,ve been told hammering a copper nail into the root will kill off any unwanted ivy, i've just got to find out where to get one from, and try it out, so will let anyone one know where to get one from and wether or not it works when i've done the job0

Hi
Any suggestions for getting rid of ivy that is coming over out fence from next door. They like it but it is coming over our fence and onto our shed. We even have some in the shed!
OH wants to finish staining the fence and can't do it with ivy on it. He has tried weedkiller, and that has killed it a bit, but not totally.
