NIP to Old Address

Options

Hi.

Earlier in the week I received a NIP through the post from Warwickshire Police where I was caught speeding on the Motorway. This offence happened in July, however due to complications with updating the V5 form, it was sent to my old address, I think I got very lucky that they sent it to me once my address had been updated instead of prosecuting.

I am now slightly paranoid about if I have been caught for other violations, of course this would’ve just gone to my old address, and maybe other authorities may not be so lenient in terms of prosecution. I was wondering if anyone knows of any way for me to check to see if my vehicle reg has been flagged for any other violations - or is it a case of directly contacting any local authority I may have driven through?

If you're worried about speeding offences the local authority cannot help as they have nothing to do with enforcement. You will have to contact the local police

Hi TooManyPoints. Yeah that makes sense, would one police region be able to see records nationwide or would I need to call individually?
  • I find it a tad worrying that you seem to have no idea whether or not you've been randomly speeding the length and breadth of the country! Perhaps have a look at those signs with the numbers in red circles next time you go out?

I think it is more covering my bases as an anxious person, I can say I've sped at least twice and not been caught, I'm sure you could too (despite the numbers in red circles being pretty blatant), and if you have never unknowingly gone over the limit, hats off to you The_Unready. A sarcastic response wasn't really needed here was it?

Could you pop round to your old address and see if they have kept anything?

AIUI the police don't routinely check again with the DVLA after sending the NIP to the address at the time of the offence. They probably tracked you down via the insurance database.

Unfortunately it's quite a distance away.

Why would they track me down instead of doing what is easiest for them?

No. You'd have to enquire individually.

Most forces do make a bit of an effort. I have found that they generally have no wish to prosecute for "failing to provide driver's details" (which is a more serious offence carrying six points and greater repercussions insurance-wise) unless there is no alternative.

I can't explain the police's thinking (if any!). But it any event it seems equally easy.
