My daughter has just let me know her completion date is 17 December. She and her partner are in a rental, and I have offered to pay for a 'deep clean' hoping they might get their deposit back. They gave their notice at the flat on 1 December so have time.
So far I've said that on completion day she will get the keys, and should have contents insurance in place from that day. I've also said to photograph all meters and let all utilities know they are the new owners.
I've just remembered they should set up mail redirection, but can't think of anything else, help!

Council tax?

From memory don't you have to take out buildings insurance from exchange? They should have contents insurance on the flat already. If they get a combined buildings and contents policy for their new place they could cancel the flat contents insurance when their tenancy ends.3

Packing boxes, tape, marker penMake sure you know where the kettle / tea /coffee/ milk etc is.Light bulbsMake sure if any pets they are else where for the day, ie friends / family.Change the door locksPost redirectionHave they agreed check out with LL or agent, take photos. I think they have to be in line with the terms of their lease for leaving the flat. Have they read the 'leaving ' clause in their agreement.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

Buildings insurance from exchange:
Take meter readings with camera, store photos.
Broadband: Might need to order now-ish: Or rely on mobile-broadband with a dongle&router.0 -
Check the council tax situation - she may be liable in two places?
a) until end of tenancy
b) from start of new home ownership
Many councils used to have a 28day 'empty property' exemption, but I think a lot of them have withdrawn this now!
Also she should dig out the rental property inventory from when she moved in and see what was specifically listed/photographed then especially check the same areas/ make good any damage/ clean to the same level or better.0 -
Thank you very much for all of your comments, I will make notes and compile into a list for her.
Not sure if the council tax was included in their rent, I'll check.

start collecting banana boxes from Lidl, Aldi etc. They are great for packing up dishes, glassware and books. Are easy to carry and stack nicely. Good and sturdy.
In the box that goes with them there should be a couple of sets of cutlery, paper plates, napkins, tea/coffee/sugar and a kettle. Also another with all the precious stuff - jewelry, passports etc.
They should also have overnight bags packed so that when they are exhausted from the move they can easily get to bed and up again in the morning.
One box being moved should be clearly marked so they know where the bed linen and a couple of towels are.
Book a spa break for any cat or dog starting a couple of days before the move til a day or two after. No one wants to have a pet escape because someone helping with the move left a door open.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Additions to the “oh the day” box - a roll of kitchen paper, a couple of loo rolls, sweets (good for sugar boosts when energy levels flag) a filled water bottle each, a bundle of rags or standard cleaning cloths - plus a carrier bag to pop dirty ones in until they can go in the washing machine. If they are planning to move straight in to the house, then also a bag with bedding, toiletries and a change of clothes. As soon as their bed is in and assembled, someone should make the bed ready for them to collapse in to that night! Also a good plan to think of a clear labelling system for moving boxes - if a smallish house then a simple “each room gets a number” system is fine, although and added up or down arrow to help narrow hints down for those carrying the stuff is incredibly helpful to be able to see at a glance whether a box is going upstairs or staying down! Print each room number out in A4, and then tape or blu tac those to the doorframes. A copy of the floorplan with each room number marked on clearly can be helpful too, to let everyone familiarise themselves with the layout before getting through the door.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
