EE backdated charge?

EE contacted us to say that our broadband was due for renewal.  During discussions about packages available it came to light that they think they haven't been charging us, though husband has been paying them each month by DD but he also pays for his mobile with them by DD.  Anyway they are now saying we owe them £178 in backdated charges. They have our bank details and could have charged us so I feel it's their mistake and not our problem.   Can they do this?  Do we need to pay it?

You have used the broadband.  You should have been aware that you were not paying for it.  Now you have to pay

    Yes.

Just because they made a mistake does not remove the need to pay.
As Mobile & BB are 2 separate parts of EE. Your husband should have realised only one payment.

You don't need to pay for it obviously but they'll report that you haven't paid to so-called credit reference agencies.

I would ask for a reduction but pay something.
