I went to the  barber once: it was my husband's leaving do, so I'd made an appointment to have a trim, only the stylist had gone on holiday, not let me know, and the other stylist was too busy to squeeze me in. I was furious! They said they didn't have my number, but I'd left it enough times.

Furious, and desperate, went to the barber's. The results were OK, but no more than that, and he asked what I'd have paid and charged me that, which was a LOT more than his normal charge.

In my youth I was a hairdresser's nightmare, because I wanted my hair to curl, and it doesn't. I used to have it just long and straight, no fringe, but no fringe has ever lain down on my forehead, and even with the weight of 2' of hair, there was still a pronounced cowlick.

Hairdressers were also my nightmare: for my parents' 25th I wanted an elegant bun on the back of my head - I definitely did NOT want it on top of my head, because I'm taller than both my sisters and I didn't want to tower over them.

So think Marge Simpson, only not blue. My hair was backcombed within an inch of its life, and piled on top of my head like a birds nest. We were still finding hairpins a week later! I was in tears when I got home, and my big sister tried to take it down and put it behind my head.

Anyway, I just stopped having it cut at all, only eventually I was seriously considering getting it all lopped off, and a friend who was a hairdresser lent me some magazines to look at styles, still clueless. And then I found a salon who would do a computerised consultation for you - way back before digital cameras were a thing! It would be quite primitive now: I had all my hair 'virtually' shaved off, and then a few different styles were added round my face.

There was the classic pageboy bob, with full fringe - and my little sister stared back at me, so we weren't going THERE (not that the fringe would have fringed, but hey!)

Then there was a longer, feathery style - but they didn't have it in my 'dark blonde' colour, so I became a brunette - and my big sister stared back at me, so we weren't going there either! They tried to adjust the colour, to see if that improved things, and I saw my big sister go grey, and then purple!

I came back with a set of 4 polaroid photos (one of them was me as I was), still thinking. And then one day, when a local salon was doing cuts for charity donations, I took myself off on the grounds that if I hated it, at least the money had gone to a good cause.

So I have a sort of bob, but the hair which would go into a fringe was basically chopped off really short. As it grows, it grows straight up, a bit punky (and I am not in the least punky!) I've loved it ever since.

So I knew who'd done that initial cut, and when I needed a trim, I asked about going back to him. Turns out he was the salon deputy director, and his price was nearly £50 - and I'm talking 30 years ago!!!!! I used the learners instead, and then found a home hairdresser who was great because she told me what to ask for when we were moving away.

Do the salons near your Older Ones do 'Senior' prices on some days, @ShyAndRetiring? Or need models? Can your Older Ones make any recommendations?
:) Oh wow @Savvy_Sue it sounds like we've had similar hairdresser experiences over the years. I'm glad you found 'your' cut .... I think that makes a real difference. I had a hairdresser friend who used to give me 'my' cut in the 90s but she emigrated and I've never really had anyone who gave me a cut I liked since!

I love the way you describe becoming other members of your family when you saw the computerised cuts - it gave me flashbacks to my mum giving me a home-perm in the 80s and I turned out as a cross between my nan and Dierdre Barlow's look at the time (and it would have competed with you for the shortest fringe in the world because my fringe literally broke off)! :o

For my current quest, I'm not a yet a pensioner, just trying to get off the treadmill, so I don't qualify for discounts. There is a salon in the next town which sometimes asks for models via FaceAche, but I never seem to be quick enough (or it's with the hairdresser who gave me the cuts I didn't like). My OlderOne who goes out for cuts uses an expensive salon, so that's out, sadly. I'm looking around though, so will hope to get it sorted soon. :#

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your experiences, S&R x

When i lived in Yorkshire I had a really good hairdresser. No matter what style I wanted (there were many) she did it, and did it well.  Since moving to Lincolnshire I have tried various hairdressers but no matter how much I describe the style or the photos I take in, they don't seem to be able to do it how I want it.  I decided to grow my hair and I now have a local mobile hairdresser who does a reasonable job just trimming it but not sure she would be able to do a complete restyle. I just get a trim every so often then colour it a deep purple and get a few compliments (not bad for a 68 year old).  My main problem is clothes - I definitely can't bring myself to wear age appropriate clothing. I tend to wear more bohemian styles together with various colours of Doc Martins.

Another interesting update @ShyAndRetiring.  Go you winning £100 on the PB's. We don't really do Valentines either, however, we will enjoy a homemade steak dinner (steaks were reduced in price).  I feel it is still important to include 'treats' in our budget, but they don't have to cost lots.  A coffee and/or breakfast sounds lovely.  Loved your simple pleasures this week.

The hair chat made me smile.  I have only begun to go grey over the past couple of years, and have taken the decision to embrace my silver sparkles (love that phrase @BrilliantButScary). I feel like I have earned them.

@Humboldt. I really would love to have proper silver hair but despite being 68 this year my natural hair is still brown and no grey.  In order to go silver I would have to have my hair cut really short then bleach it then put on a silver dye.  Up to a few years ago my hair was very short all over and platinum blond but I decided to grow it to shoulder length and I can't bring myself to have it cut as my hair is very fine and takes a really long time to grow.  Might do it in the future at some point a la Judi Dench. lol.

Hi @ShyAndRetiring. I recall you mentioning Lloyds as a possible switch.

They are currently running a £175 switch offer here

    https://www.lloydsbank.com/current-accounts.html?utm_source=GOOGLE&utm_medium=paid+search&utm_campaign=UK_Brand_Lloyds_PCA&utm_term=lloyds+bank+switch+offer&utm_adgroup=UK_Brand_Lloyds_PCA+Switch_Exact&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAzvC9BhADEiwAEhtlN9az0r1TI46-2NuaIP6MkM-tdqOQ51vbNl67p7fIPGr1s8Tm3mxKHhoCt9gQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Sadly for me I don't qualify as I switched to Halifax a couple of years ago. But as always, it's free money if you qualify.

  • Hi @ShyAndRetiring
Hope everything is OK in your world.
Have you made any decisions about your hair yet?
Have you found that elusive hairdresser, or have you cut it yourself?

    Ahhh hello lovely people!  :)

Thank you all so much for stopping by. Life's been a bit of a hiccup (update shortly) but lovely to finally catch up.

@uralmaid @BrilliantButScary @Humboldt - the hair has been cut! About 6" off the longest parts, I now have a shaggy rock chick look a la Susie Quatro - you, I've time travelled back to the 70s in both style and salon as I found a fab hairdresser in a tiny local indoor marketplace, it looked like a shop rather than a salon, literally the sink is behind a shower curtain in the corner of the room, so I'd never considered it as a salon option. Very nice lady, been there for years apparently and approx £20 cheaper per service than anything else locally.

Had a cut and blow dry - have to say I wasn't keen on the blow dry but actually that's down to me and how I prefer my hair to 'go' rather than the hairdresser's skills. I feel like I've found 'my' hairdresser now, so all is good and my silver sparkles are now far more even with the longer darker hair cut off.

Appreciate you all chipping in with this, thank you, S&R x

    HI @Organgrinder

Thank you for this .. will have a go in March, will just need to add a couple of DDs as the account I'll use doesn't have any. I could add my PayPal, I guess, that might count as one.

Useful heads up, thanks so much, S&R x

Hairstyle sounds great! It is surprising what a difference it makes, when we are happy with our hair.
