Bank accounts with married and maiden surnames, Lloyds bank

Hello,

I recently got married and went into Lloyds bank to change my name on my joint accounts with my now husband.  I also have a current account and savings account with  Lloyds which I want to remain in my maiden name, that is the name I use in my profession and the name I have had for over 30 years.  Lloyds bank have told me I can't have accounts in different names as they come under the umbrella of my profile.  I find it very difficult to believe that it is not possible to have accounts held by the same bank but under different names.  I have all the paperwork as evidence of my married and professional names.  Surely this is not uncommon, such as doctors?  Anyone been in a similar position?

Many thanks!

Can you tell them that they need to set up a different profile for you for the joint account or vice versa?

Or tell your husband to change his name to match yours?   :)

Is changing banks for one set of accounts a possibility?  Or, at least, telling them you see no option but to do so?

I suspect it would be easier if you have the accounts with different names, with different banks. Probably not the answer you want though, if you want to have all your accounts in one place.

Are you retaining ID in your maiden name?

Hoping to have some ID in both.  Difficult emotionally to get rid of a name I've had for 56 years!  Ideally would like to keep my maiden name for professional reasons and my married name for social.

An account can hold more or less any name - so could have your maiden name - but the names on accounts aren't really used for much other than helping you tell the difference between accounts if you have more than one of them.

All your accounts will be linked to a single customer record, and this record can only hold one name.  (or only one "main/current" name).

To have one of your accounts linked to a different name you'd need a separate customer record - i.e. you'd have to be a customer of Lloyds twice, if that's possible.  I don't imagine Lloyds would like that as it brings with it complications for things like GDPR, AML, FSCS etc.

An alternative could be to have your account for professional purposes as a business account - which could then have a separate customer record (depending on how Lloyds do things).  This would likely involve a fee though.   But on the other hand, if you're using the account for professional purposes they might want it to be a business account anyway.

The only thing your customer name is relevant for (for anyone other than yourself) is for CoP checking if someone is paying you via bank transfer.

My understanding is that legally you can use only one surname for official purposes. So you will probably need to decide whether to legally remain Ms X and use Mrs Y informally, or vice versa. Do make sure your official ID remains consistent with your choice otherwise you may have issues.

In the UK there is no legal requirement to use one particular name over another - so long as you are not doing so to commit fraud (or some other crime).

Obviously, using a name that isn't yours makes it very hard to do things like confirm your identity, so it's not commonly done, but it's not illegal.

You can ultimately be known by as many different things as you want but banks will want to follow the name thats on an official document like your passport.

I do know 1 person who has a "professional name" as he changed his name when he got married but the only thing left in his bachelor (guessing the male equivalent) name is his registration as a solicitor and his work email. Passport, driving license, credit cards, bank accounts are all in his married name.

You could have just kept your maiden name and not changed at all. A friend married after 40 years because his pension would only pay out to a spouse and not a non-married partner. They did the absolute minimum and no one changed names etc.

You dont need a bank account in a professional name to use an alternative name in the work place.

I suspect having a business account would complicate things.
I had a business account with Lloyds.  It was for a partnership (with my husband).
We ended the work and closed the account but it had complications when, though the business account was closed, it was still linked to me and meant I had to go into a branch whenever I wanted to open a new account as it would not let me do so online.
They may have improved their procedures but it could be very annoying.
