Near a schoolSome things you won't spot even if you drive past a few times before putting in an offer (or even after). Like close to a school if it's the summer time. Close to a sports ground out of season. That the house is on a t junction and your lounge windows get the full force of car headlights.
Strangely the one thing the OH put as a restriction when we first were buying a house was living too close to a train line. Not because of the noise but he was worried about our cat's safety.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Noisy neighboursI lived near a busy A ring road. I worked full time so my commuting was at the busiest time but it was quiet evenings and weekends. On a day off/working from home, I could definitely hear it if the garden doors/windows were open. It vaguely irritated me but not much. My husband couldn't hear it at all. When selling, one buyer pulled out because they visited during commuting hours and decided it was too loud for them. Others that visited during similarly busy times couldn't hear the road and saw it as a commuting asset (which it was for me, when I bought it) ... Noisy neighbours would bother me a lot more, so I voted for that.I live near a primary school but I work full time so it doesn't affect me at all. On days off/holidays, I quite like the noise of the children. Interestingly, my husband DOES notice that!1

Near a schoolNear a school.
Where I live, the roads near me can be a bit hectic when it's home time, I tend to leave work 30-40 mins before they finish or if I know I will hit it, stay on a bit longer.0 -
Noisy neighboursNoisy neighbours. A motorway runs over a road on my estate less than 200 yards away. It's well shielded so I rarely notice it.
Wouldn't like to live near a school, hate being on a bus when they are let out of school. Causes traffic congestion as well.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -
Near a motorway ( can hear the HUM at varying levels at different times/seasonsDistant hum is fine - but by "near" I was thinking < 400m from a motorway.
Many of these buyers wouldn't normally spot until they came for a viewing. Except #1 - a motorway.
When something is too near a motorway - many buyers won't even come to view it. So they won't ever find out how many cars there are on the road or whether the neighbours might be noisy. Yes pylons are on maps - but most people won't spot them until they view.0 -

Too remoteAnother big issue is the lack of a bath. Some people really don’t like homes with only showers.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. That's a relatively trivial fix though. We had a bath as must have item and bought a house without one because we figure it'll only cost us a few £k to get one installed which is peanuts compared to the £250k we paid for the house.
Unless it's been built/modified in such a way that there's no space for a bath.

Most of those things aren't necessarily go-to's.If you've got kids, being near a school is great. If you've got a long commute or are on the road a lot then living near a motorway is great. If you like being outside local greenery is good.0
